Teaching Impulse Control To Toddlers

One of the things I remember most about Tyler’s toddler years was how impulsive he was. The constant grabbing of items within his reach. The climbing on objects to grab items that was not within his reach. Toddlers have little impulse control. They see something they want and they feel they should have it. More Toddler Discipline Part II

It should have been no real surprise when using time outs to discipline my son became more or less ineffective. Even though I explained to him before and after each time out why he was in time out and what he needed to do to avoid time outs in the future, they were not getting the job done. Something had to change and it did. We transitioned to the concept of consequences for our actions. Bad behavior earned an undesirable consequence and good behavior reaped desirable consequences. “I Still FEEL Hungry”

I couldn’t help but ask my son the other morning after he had cooked himself 6 fried eggs, sliced up a large apple, and was having a big bowl of cereal–all for breakfast–if he was really THAT hungry, or if he was eating for other reasons. He looked at me, perplexed, through his nearly 16-year-old eyes and answered, “I certainly FEEL hungry.” He went on to explain that he was hoping if he ate enough for breakfast, it would hold him over until lunch without feeling like he needed to have a snack.
