Keeping Kids Safe Online

When you are a single parent your child may spend more time unsupervised than you would like, it’s important to teach them basic safety. One of the big areas that you need to be concerned with is the internet. While there are many good things online, education things, there are other things that can be harmful if your child ventures in unsupervised. Everyone has heard stories of online predators and bullies, so how do we protect our kids? I think the most important thing you can do it talk with your children. Before they go online the first time it … Continue reading

Candy Land – An All Time Classic Board Game

My three-year old has been home everyday for a month now. We yanked her out of her old school/daycare in mid-May, allowing her to be home with her new little sister, her mommy and, depending on the day, one of her grandmothers or myself. The sure-to-be painful transition back to school starts on Monday, June 18th. It is a new school, but is running a camp format for the summer, something totally new and fun, so we are hoping the excitement and adventure quality of camp will help her overcome any trepidation she may experience (wishfully thinking, I know). In … Continue reading

Disney Cruise Lines – Activities for Kids

Hello Disney blog readers! My name is Tracy, and I will be joining you all here as a blogger. I work for the Mouse now, at the Cruise Line, so my intention is to provide you with tips, tricks, and news regarding Disney Cruise Lines mostly, but also interesting facts and history about the Man, The Mouse, and the company. I love this company, and I always have loved everything Disney. I really am one of the “Big Kids” as we call them. Put me in the middle of the Magic Kingdom, and I swear I am five years old … Continue reading

Age Appropriate Kids Board Games

In a previous blog I talked about the Million Family Challenge and its goal of encouraging families to play board games together. Tyler and I signed up for the challenge and have had fun playing games and logging our minutes. Although we play games all the time, I’ve had to find new games to keep things interesting. One of the biggest challenges when selecting games is choosing the right game for your child’s age. In the February/March 2005 issue of Scholastic Parent and Child, some of the guesswork has been done for you. They offer a list of some of … Continue reading

Free Fun to Battle the Winter Blues

This week, much of the nation has been paralyzed by brutally cold temperatures.  In my neck of the woods, several school districts closed because it was simply too dangerous to allow children to be exposed to -35 degree windchills. Old Man Winter’s brutal blast has forced many families indoors where they are spending quality time together watching movies, playing board games and cooking.  Fortunately, these activities don’t have to put a strain on your household budget, including the movie-watching. These days there are a slew of simple ways you can avoid paying high fees for movie rentals.  One of the … Continue reading

The Many Marathons of runDisney

I just came in from my morning run with my dog, so it seems appropriate that now I’d sit down to write about the Disney Parks’ many marathons. I run for the sake of my health and my dog’s health, however, not so much for fun, so don’t expect to hear of me signing up for any of these any time soon. For 2012 runDisney has added another marathon to its schedule. The Los Angeles Examiner reports that on January 29, 2012 Disneyland will host the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. This is another event exclusively for women, joining the already-established … Continue reading

Homeschool Word of the Day: Strewing

Strewing means scattering, or dispersing haphazardly. In homeschooling, to strew is to leave education books, materials, and games lying about in the child’s path. Strewing is a word used by unschoolers. While unschoolers allow their children to follow their own paths, many do manage to direct the kids a bit with strategic placement of learning materials. Sandra Dodd, who coined the term, explains this practice well on her website. She explains, “Some of our most successful items have been toys or objects for playing with (sometimes not purely a toy) like pattern blocks, castle blocks, magnets (or some new magnet … Continue reading

Websites for keeping homeschooling fun

If you don’t find ways to keep homeschooling fun it will be just a matter of time before the kids begin longing for public school. In fact, I often counsel homeschoolers whose kids are hesitant to homeschool to take extra time to show them how fun homeschooling can be. Here are some ideas for keeping homschooling fun with online games. The internet is chock-full of online games. There are games for math, reading, science, and even art. Whenever one of my kids is struggling with a particular subject, I do a search for an appropriate online game that will give … Continue reading

Election Night Party

Why not throw together an election-day party for your family? If you have extended family or friends who can join you, so much the better. (Use judgment in selecting guests who can watch and discuss election results with each other in a civil manner.) Invitations: Have these ready when your crew comes home from work or school: Folded cardstock: on front, paste a clip art image of Uncle Sam and write“I WANT YOU…” On the inside write “… to join me for an election party.” Then lower on the page put the headline: “Proposition One” and following that this text: … Continue reading
