The Most Popular Baby Names of 2016

Every year, the Social Security Administration releases a list of the most popular baby names from the previous year. There is a list for names given to baby girls, and another list of names given to baby boys. In general, the lists change – even if only slightly – from one year to the next. The Social Security Administration uses specific qualifications regarding the names that end up on the list. Names are restricted to cases where the year of birth, sex, and State of birth (50 and District of Columbia) are on record, and where the given name is … Continue reading

An eleven year old boy who has autism saved up his money for years in order to buy a very special LEGO set. This is Boys on Adolescence

Once I saw a great illustration of the difference between men and women. It was grossly simplistic, of course, but like all great illustrations, it captured the core of so many things in a single image. Actually, there were two images. The first image was of a rectangular box. It was completely covered in dials, knobs, levers, and latches. The heading on the image was “Woman.” The second image was of the same rectangular box — but with only a single on/off switch in the middle. The heading on the image was “Man.” I remember laughing out loud when I … Continue reading

Peaceable Kingdom: Sticker Kits

Peaceable Kingdom is know for making earth friendly, top quality, and fun products that children love. In addition to their creative learning games, cooperative games, unique birthday cards, and diaries they also offer stickers! My love for stickers has hardly diminished since I was a child. I still enjoy giving stickers to my children and love how excited they get over this simple concept. Over the years stickers retained their fun but have come a long way. Instead of simple sticky backed images children put on notebooks, folders and papers we see sticker activities and kits. Peaceable Kingdom had a … Continue reading

Are They Twins or Just Siblings?

Usually, it is easy to figure out the proper kinship term that should be attached to the members of a particular family. Sometimes, though, things get a bit tricky. For example, if two babies are born at the same time to a mother who has two uteruses, are those babies twins, or just siblings? Genealogy is the study of family. Most aspects of genealogy are pretty regulated. The same kinship terms are used to indicate a particular genetic relationship in every family. For example, your grandmother is either the mother of your mother, or the mother of your father. This … Continue reading

Should Girls Be Treated Differently?

I have often heard parents say that raising girls is harder. There is something about a girl that I think makes us want to be more protective. There is a special innocence about her that we want to see kept in tact. Don’t get me wrong, though. Parents want to protect their boys as well. I have two of them so I understand. But I think there is just an assumption that they will somehow make it. Girls seem to need more protection. So my question is should girls be treated differently than boys? In More Musings of a Mom, … Continue reading
