Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: Share Your Story!

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month! If you’ve been thinking about rescuing a pet from a local shelter, this is a good time to do it. (Okay, there isn’t really a BAD time to save a pet from a shelter, is there?) There are so many wonderful pets sitting in shelters for various reasons. Maybe their owners had an unexpected health issue and had to surrender them. Maybe a soldier was deployed and couldn’t find a new home for a beloved pet. Maybe an abandoned dog or cat had a litter in the wild and was picked up by … Continue reading

Dancing with Your Dog: Music and Costume Ideas

Ever since I interviewed Beth Terrell and she introduced me to the world of puppy dancing, I find myself thinking about music and costume ideas. I swear, once we get Murph’s paw healed, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if I enroll us in a puppy dancing class. There are so many opportunities to get creative! Music Ideas Beth may have been the catalyst that got me started thinking about dancing with my dog, but the Greatest American Dog’s Dancing with the Dogs episode was the one that got me thinking about the music. In that episode, the contestants had … Continue reading

Planning for Pets When Emergencies Call You Away: A Checklist

Yesterday I wrote about what we’d do with our pets if an emergency called us away. Do you know what you’d do? Do you have a plan in place? If not, I created a list of things to think about and prepare for ahead of time. 1) If you take your pets with you, will you have a place to stay that welcomes them too? If you won’t be staying with relatives (or can’t), make a list of pet-friendly hotels in the area. (Before you need them, but confirm the pet-friendly status still exists when you book your room.) Use … Continue reading

Would You Make a Good Parent for a Deaf Pet?

I really took my quest to heart in regards to finding information about training deaf dogs for my friend who found out she’d adopted a deaf puppy. In addition to finding information on the Internet, I also posted a request for help in the Pets forum. Interestingly, several Families.com family members responded that either they’ve had deaf pets or knew of people who did. Not just dogs, but also cats and even a ferret was mentioned. The one thing that wasn’t mentioned was getting rid of any kind of deaf pet. Everyone who shared stories of deaf pets mentioned how … Continue reading

Are You “Rescuing”?

I admit that I sometimes wrestle with “rescuing” behaviors as a parent. It can be incredibly challenging not to step in and try to “help” our kids when they get in a bind or a scrape. And sometimes, it can be confusing as to whether we are actually rescuing or we are participating in natural and logical consequences. None of us is perfect, but keeping the “question” of whether or not we are rescuing our child when he or she needs to stand on his own can help us to keep from intervening when we shouldn’t. Think of rescuing as … Continue reading

Think You’re Dedicated to the Job? You’ve Got Nothing on This Man…

I was just reading a news story, and it made me laugh. Maybe that’s horrible of me (you’ll find out why in just a second) but I couldn’t help myself. It just seems like something I would do. A janitor in Poughkeepsie, New York, was mopping the floor on Friday night, the 23rd of February, when the door swung shut behind him. That wouldn’t be so bad, except the room was a “secure room,” meaning the door locked from the outside when it shut behind him. To top it all off, he left his cell phone in his coat pocket, … Continue reading

Who Adopted You?

On Christmas Eve, while at my mom and dad’s home, my husband, kids and I began to wind down for the night. My husband retreated to the spare room with our youngest, and our oldest who is five-and-a-half and I stayed out in the living room for our sleep over. Some of the grown-ups had been watching television prior so my son and I caught the tail end of the show COPS. Though this is not something we typically allow our young children to watch, it happened and my son was left with questions. This particular episode was on drug … Continue reading

What is “Lazy Parenting” ?

There are a variety of parenting styles to choose from. Most people pick the one that their own parents used, or they select a style that they feel best fits their family. “Lazy parenting” is an option. It may sounds neglectful – or even dangerous – if you are unfamiliar with how it works. Oddly enough, so called “Lazy Parenting” may actually be more intensive, and difficult, than other parenting styles. No one wants to be called “lazy”. The word has a very negative connotation! One might assume that “lazy parenting” is a style selected by slacker parents who don’t … Continue reading
