Governor of Nebraska Doesn’t Want to Comply With ACA

The Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. Many state Governors were waiting to see what the court would decide about the ACA before they began work on their exchanges. The Governor of Nebraska, Dave Heineman, now wants to wait to see how the Presidential election turns out. It has been very interesting to see how people are reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. Some people are celebrating, others are depressed, and still others have mixed feelings about it. No matter what your personal opinion about it happens to be, it is, officially, the … Continue reading

Spot Cleaning the Bathroom

My least favorite room to clean is the bathroom. But you can make cleaning the bathroom easier by spot cleaning. Spot cleaning in the bathroom should be done as necessary but I also recommend light cleaning on a daily basis. If you do, you will find that it only becomes necessary to deep clean once-a-week. And you have the assurance that your bathroom is always ready for guests. To make spot cleaning easier, keep cleaning supplies in your bathroom. If you have to retrieve them from another room, you are more likely to forget or just skip it. For cleaning … Continue reading

When Veterinary Euthanasia is O.K.

In an old episode of “The Office,” Dwight puts his girlfriend Angela’s beloved cat in the freezer. He does so because the cat is ancient and has so many medical issues that it’s barely alive. Dwight lives on a farm, and as he tells a devastated Angela, “sometimes farm people have to do what city folk are too weak to.” Obviously Dwight’s actions on the show are horrible (and played for comedic effect), but they raise an interesting question: Dwight genuinely thought he was doing what was best for the cat and he did it in what he considered a … Continue reading

Feeling Helpless

I have had a fair amount of trouble with my car this year. This summer I ended up stranded in the middle of the highway in near 100 degree weather on my own. Both the battery and the alternator went bad the same day. Needless to say a few tears were shed that day as cars were whizzing past me. As a single parent I was already struggling financially. I didn’t have the money to replace everything, but somehow I managed. Now, not even six months later my car is giving me grief again, and two days before Christmas. As … Continue reading

The High Price of Cute Kid Shots

For most parents, the sky’s the limit when it comes to budgeting for professional photos of their children. Of course, these days you almost have to dig deep if you want personalized pictures of your kids. Professional infant photography has come a long way since the days when naked babies were placed on bearskin rugs and mom and dad cooed in the corner as the photographer snapped a few cute shots. Today, baby photography is a sophisticated genre which aims to produce high-quality artistic images that will last for generations. Still, there are a slew of camera-wielding parents out there … Continue reading

Take the Atkins Survey!

Shortly after deciding that I wanted to start the Atkins diet, I located their website. If you sign up, you can access many helpful online tools. I elected to allow the Atkins website to send me email. Thirty days later, I was asked to take the Atkins survey. Normally, I do everything I can to prevent a website from sending me a bunch of emails. Like many of you, I tend to consider those emails to be “spam”. My experience is that the emails that companies send to people who sign up to their websites are frequently filled with advertisements … Continue reading

Sappy Love Songs and My Husband

The other day, I was listening to a particularly sappy love song, sung by a man, and the thought popped into my head—are these lyrics representative of what a man really thinks about his woman? Or are these songs targeted to the female audience and therefore, only give the women what they want to hear? I asked my husband this question, and he shared some interesting insights with me. “The mushy songs, no,” he said. “But the songs that talk about faithfulness and feelings that endure, yes. Those are the songs that resonate with me and the way I feel … Continue reading

How to Know When You Should Have Another Baby

Once you have a child, it can be so hard to know if you should have another one. You are often afraid you won’t love the second as much as the first. But, then you have number two, and realize that your love is not divided. It just grows. But, when you are ready to have number 3, maybe the more likely question is, “Can I handle it?” Three seems like a crowd. Seriously. I have two kids. A boy and a girl. In some ways, it takes the pressure off of having a third. I got one of each, … Continue reading
