I’m Always Coming Back

Mommy’s Christmas Break is coming to a close. Monday it’s back to school and back to daycare. My heart sinks every time I think about it. I’m usually really excited to get back to school, but this time the thought makes me want to break down and cry. I’ve gone to school from the time Logan was born. It’s all he’s ever known. But now that I am officially into my major I have a lot less flexibility with my schedule. This means that he is going to be spending a lot more time in daycare. The lady that does … Continue reading

First Day Jitters

My son started daycare this week. I spent a lot of time beforehand researching different daycare centers, looking into family and friends that did daycare, etc. After stressing about it for most of the summer I finally found one that I felt pretty good about. We set up a time to go meet with her about two weeks before I was supposed to start back to school. We went to her house and met a few of the other kids. Logan warmed up fairly quickly and I started to feel like everything was going to be ok. Then my old … Continue reading

First Week of School

After Jessie’s time in school last year and a very successful first day this term, she showed promise for easy transition each day. Jessie had a great first day of school. Her second day resembled the day before less and more like the school days last year. Each morning I parked and walked with Jessie to the school gym to wait in the Pre-K line with her. When the lines were dismissed by grade to go to their classes, I’d walk Jessie to her room and then leave. The second school day brought the first wave of tears. We stood … Continue reading

Back to School Books

If your child is starting school there are some great books that will help him to prepare for this big event in his life. You may have a child who is excited or you may have a child who is a little fearful. This may be your child’s first year of school or it could be their third year. For some children every year is difficult for them until they get the hang of the routine. After all, they have had the summer off with a completely different schedule. They have not had homework either. Bedtime did not come with … Continue reading

Back To School Jitters

The end of summer signifies the beginning of a new school year. Some children become bored over the summer months and love the additional socialization that a new school year brings. Many children have had a wonderful summer filled with all kinds of things to do and dread this time of the year. It brings a great deal of anxiety for them. Here are some things that you can do to help children make the back to school transition a bit easier: *Talk to your child about his fears or concerns. Let him know that his concern is important even … Continue reading

Preschool Jitters

Summer is almost over and it’s time to begin a new school year. For many this will be the start of a brand new world. Some children who never entered a classroom will walk into preschool for the first time. It will be the first time some children are away from their parents for any length of time. The first time a child may be expected to sit and listen. The first time a child will be introduced to lessons and classmates on a regular basis. It is a very exciting world yet it can be overwhelming and intimidating for … Continue reading

Back-to-School Reading

Hallmark has been selling Halloween cards and decorations since July (they’re hawking Christmas tree ornaments too), so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Barnes and Noble has an entire display of back-to-school themed books set up in the middle of their kids’ section. Fortunately, my 6-year-old loves school, so she didn’t hightail it out of the store screaming like a banchee upon seeing the sky-high display heralding the end of summer vacation. Instead, my little bookworm made a beeline for her favorite book series, many of which feature back-to-school editions, including: Pinkalicious: School Rules by Victoria Kann Victoria Kann’s … Continue reading

Don’t let homeschooling jitters discourage you

Beginning to homeschool is a little like starting college: you know that you want to do it, and you (possibly) have an end goal in mind. You’ve chosen your school, you’re registered for classes, and you’ve moved into the dorm. So far, so good. The basic requirements are all in place. What you don’t know is what the daily routine will be like, if you’ll get along with your roommate, how hard your classes will be, how well your high school study habits will serve you, and if you’ll do well enough to cross that eventual finish line and get … Continue reading

Got a Case of the Jitters?

You probably remember the feeling from your own wedding or maybe you are experiencing them now. We’ve all had that feeling – the fluttering in the stomach, the second-guessing, the what ifs and the oh my goodness – what am I doing? These sensations have been felt by brides and grooms for millennia. The first thing to remember about the jitters is that they are perfectly normal. We get jitters about everything from a major purchase to a college enrollment to having a child to a child’s first day at school to a first date to the day we say … Continue reading

Mixed Blessing

My son is an only child. At three years old he would much rather play with an adult than a child. With him starting kindergarten in a year and a half I was getting a little worried about the new social aspect it would bring. He hasn’t been around a lot of kids. He has a few cousins, but I usually find him playing by himself. It’s easier that way; less sharing. I wanted to be sure that he would be able to make some friends at school, but I wasn’t sure how to approach the situation. With our busy … Continue reading
