Dad in Denial

Can money really solve your biggest problems? A billionaire dad is really, really hoping it can. Cecil Chao is so livid that his smoking hot daughter, Gigi, recently wed her same-sex partner that he is offering a $65 million “marriage bounty” to any man who can get her to change her sexual preference. In other words, the 76-year-old Hong Kong business tycoon is in complete denial that his darling daughter is a lesbian and is willing to pay a pretty penny to any guy who can turn her straight. Denial is not an unusual parental reaction upon learning about a … Continue reading

Extreme Parenting or Extreme Stupidity?

No parent takes delight in seeing his child fail at school. However, most moms and dads don’t try to disown their kid when she flunks a test. It’s called being reasonable, rational… sane. Sadly, some parents don’t exercise these gifts and you end up with a story like Tuan Huynh’s. The Pennsylvania dad has been court ordered to move out of his home until he completes a mandatory parenting class, as well as 100 hours of community service. Huynh’s punishment is a result of abandoning his 16-year-old daughter outside of a mall because she received a failing grade at school. … Continue reading

Record-Breaking Baby Daddy

If guys could get pregnant, I’m pretty sure Desmond Hatchett wouldn’t be making headlines for fathering 30 children. And I’m not talking about Duggar-style procreating. The infamous sperm donor, whom Dr. Drew calls a “menace to society,” has 30 children by 11 different women. Hatchett briefly caught the eye of the media back in 2009 when his notorious spawning tally stood at 21 children. Now, the 33-year-old baby daddy is back in the news, and it’s not because he has since added nine more children to his brood. According to reports, Hatchett is begging the state of Tennessee to help … Continue reading

Mothers: A Sorority of Complainers?

(Sweeter than a Dyson.) You are looking at one of the lovely Mother’s Day gifts I was presented with yesterday by my adorable daughter. As you can tell, it can’t be used to suck up strewn Cheerios from hardwood or carpeted floors, nor can it separate dust by cyclonic action and spin it out of the airstream with the simple press of a button. Also, it doesn’t rhyme with Dyson. Regardless, I love my card, especially the handwritten note scribbled in bright pink crayon inside. It will forever help me remember Mother’s Day 2012. The holiday has come and gone … Continue reading

Selfish Is as Selfish Does

Just when you thought that parents were realizing that it’s not such a good idea to leave young kids alone in a car while they take care of business elsewhere, a story like this makes national headlines: BREAKING NEWS OUT OF KATY, TEXAS: SELFISH FATHER CHOOSES GUN SHOPPING OVER KID WATCHING That’s my title, and I unequivocally stand by the use of “selfish.” Here’s why. According to Texas law enforcement, a dad is being investigated by Child Protective Services after leaving his two young children in the backseat of a hot van while he spent in hour in an air … Continue reading

Score One for the Kids

Since becoming a parent I try very hard not to judge other moms and dads. However, there are some things that I simply cannot reconcile being done to children regardless of circumstances: severe beatings, starvation, mental abuse… and leaving a kid alone in a vehicle. I realize that many, many parents routinely leave their children unattended in vehicles during quick pit stops at stores, the post office, gas station or when picking up older kids at school. I once met a mom who left her 6-month-old strapped in an infant carrier in the back seat of her vehicle while she … Continue reading

Does the Punishment Fit the Crime?

Each Friday my second grader is given a spelling test at school. On Monday she brings home a list of 20 words. She then has four days to master the correct spelling of each word prior to the Friday morning exam. Last week, my daughter announced that she had to study extra hard for the test because her teacher planned to dole out a punishment to those who didn’t ace the exam. According to my kid, if a student misspelled a word, he or she would be forced to write the correct version 100 times during recess. Fortunately, my daughter … Continue reading

What Makes a Mother?

(Am I a “real” mom?) “It feels like you’re really officially, really truly a mother when you have two kids.” Really? I’m pretty sure actress Jessica Alba regrets having uttered those words during an interview with PEOPLE magazine. Then again, maybe she stands behind each and every syllable. Alba’s comment went viral months ago, yet whenever I conduct an online search for information about transitioning from a one-child household to a two-child home, the Hollywood mom’s infamous quote still pops up. Seems as though parents of singletons don’t much care for the movie star’s opinion on what it takes to … Continue reading

Dessert for Breakfast

Think of the most heinous accusation that has ever been hurled in your direction. If you are a parent, you likely shudder at the thought of being categorized with these derelict moms and dads, who shouldn’t even be free to walk the earth, let alone be allowed to influence a young life. While you may refrain from using an electronic dog collar to shock your young children as a means of punishment and entertainment, attaching your 13-year-old to the roof of the family van to hold down a large cardboard box, knowingly poison your kids in an effort to score … Continue reading

No-Win Situation

Dan Dorn won’t get his wish after all, but then again neither will his ex-wife… or their three children. A judge finally made a decision in the case of the brain damaged mother whose parents were looking to secure more visitation time for her with the triplets she gave birth to in 2006. According to ABC News, Judge Fredrick Shaller ordered that Abbie Dorn will be allowed five-day visits once a year, where her children will travel to see her for three hours each day at her parents’ home in South Carolina. During the visits only Dorn, her ex-husband Dan … Continue reading
