Baking Cookies With My Kids

by Teresa McEntire | More from this Blogger

One of my favorite things to do with my kids is cook. Every holiday we like to make sugar cookies and decorate them. So this morning we mixed up the sugar cookie dough and put it in the refrigerator. This makes the dough less sticky, very important when children are involved.

When my son got home from school we pulled out the dough and started rolling. Each of my children chose their own Halloween cookie cutter. I had a ghost, bat, and pumpkin. I spread plenty of flour on the table, since I didn't want any cookies sticking. My son used a rolling pin and rolled out his own dough. I rolled out the dough for my girls and then they cut out the shapes with the cookie cutter. It was so much fun watching their grins and hearing their shouts of delight as the ghosts, bats, and pumpkins appeared. They were so busy rolling out the dough that they didn't even eat any.

I carefully placed the cut out cookies on a cookie sheet and baked them. After they were cool it was time to decorate them. We used chocolate frosting for the bats, white for the ghosts, and of course orange for the pumpkins.

When their dad got home they proudly showed him the cookies that they made. Then we all enjoyed a Halloween treat. I just wish I'd gotten out my camera. Oh well, next time.

Try making your own sugar cookies with your kids and build some lasting holiday memories.

My Sugar Cookie Recipe This recipe is delicious and makes about 2-dozen cookies.

1\2 c shortening 1\2 tsp salt 1 c sugar 1\2 tsp soda 1 eggs 2 tsp baking powder 1\2 c milk 3 c flour 1\2 tsp vanilla

Cream the shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs, milk and vanilla. Stir in the rest of the ingredients. Roll the dough out thick (1\4 - 1\2 inch) for softer cookies. Bake at 375 degrees for about 6 minutes. The cookies are done when lightly browned on the bottom and still white on top. Let them sit on the cookie sheet for 3-5 minutes before moving to a rack to cool.
