I Told You So!

“I told you so.” Those are words that grate on my nerves. And while that might not have been the exact phrase uttered, it was what I heard. Yes, I knew when my 18-year-old son signed up for the military that I had to expect a lot of things. Like the initial separation, the lack of contact I would have while in basic training, the second goodbye after seeing him graduate and then learning what his first duty base station would be. I’m no dummy. Of course I knew that he could end up receiving an assignment overseas. And if … Continue reading

Be Careful What You Wish For

Has anyone ever told you to be careful what you wished for? I was reminded of that when I was first divorced and Hailey would go to her father’s for the weekend. I remember so many times thinking, I wish she would be quiet for just a minute, it’s so noisy in here I can’t even hear myself think! Then her father picked her up for that first weekend visit. Suddenly the house was too quiet, and I was at an absolute loss as to what to do with myself while she was gone. It got easier as time went … Continue reading

Be Careful What You Wish For

Its funny how as a parent something you wish for can end up coming back to bite you. As any regular reader of mine knows, my 17-year-old son is going through the process of enlisting in the Air Force. It has been a journey that has taken me up and brought me down. There are so many emotions involved. My latest hope was that my son would do well on his ASVAB test. That stands for “Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.” The higher you score on this test, the more opportunities that are available. So as most parents hope for, … Continue reading

Meaningful Thanksgiving Layouts

Uncle Frank chowing down on pumpkin pie, grandma serving up her famous green bean casserole and the kids fighting over who gets the turkey wishbone. We’ve all created scrapbook layouts using photos of the aforementioned events, but do you really want to go another year filing the same ol’ images in the same ol’ spots and accenting them with the same ol’ embellishments? This Thanksgiving why not add some pizzazz to your page designs by adding touching sayings that reflect the true meaning behind the holiday. If you don’t want to exercise your creative muscle and write out a few … Continue reading

What To Do When You Make a Mistake

I’ve been there, done that hundreds of times. Whether it’s misspelling a word on a title, adding the wrong embellishment to a layout or using uneven ribbons to decorate a page border, scrapbooking is not without its fair share of errors. Obviously, some mistakes are easier to fix than others. When you misspell a word on a title it’s a bit harder to fix than if you made the same mistake on a small journaling block. Ditto for placing the wrong photo in a layout. If you catch your error early, you have an excellent chance of remedying the problem … Continue reading

Is Your Home-Based Work Working for Your Family?

Working from home can be a wonderful way for parents to make staying home to care for children make economic sense for their families. Although that is a good thing, it can sometimes be difficult for a parent who is staying home to raise children to decide how to integrate working from home into the rhythm of their days. There is no one set formula for deciding how much work to take on, how many hours to work each day or each week, when to work during the day, or anything else. Add to this the fact that the appropriate … Continue reading

Could You Be A Call Center Representative?

If you are looking for work that you can do from home, you may want to look into whether a call center job is right for you. Many companies use home-based call center representatives to place telemarketing calls, provide customer service, and offer technical support. As with any other type of work-at-home job, you will want to do an honest assessment of whether this type of work is something that will work for you. You also must thoroughly research the call center positions that you are thinking of applying for before you send them any of your personal information. There … Continue reading

Keeping Your Kids Safe During the Holidays

So, yesterday my friend calls to ask me if our Christmas tree was up and decorated. (It is.) Then, she proceeded to tell me that after spending three hours trimming her family’s 7-foot Douglas fir the entire thing came crashing down… on her 16-month-old son. Fortunately, he didn’t suffer any major injuries, but since the fall the tree has been banished to the corner of the living room and is trapped behind a wall of child safety gates. Not that it really needs the protection given that her son is now deathly afraid of the fir. My pal’s anecdote serves … Continue reading
