Blogs and Dads and Communication

Writing about being a father is not the easiest thing. For one thing, there’s a lot of self-analysis that goes into the process, and most guys are not into that. For another, it involves having lots of experience at being a father, and sadly, many guys are not. In many respects the work that I do at this site is the most difficult I’ve done. But it’s also some of the most important. For those who read my blog – thanks, Mom! – you hopefully gain some insights into how a father thinks. I don’t know if I am a … Continue reading

Greetings from the New Fatherhood Blogger

My name is Kevin Delp, and I’ve recently joined the ranks of bloggers here at families.com as the man responsible for the Fathers’ section. I’d like to take the opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I’m happily married to my college sweetheart and wife of eleven years, Valorie. Together we have managed to survive (so far… knock on wood) raising five children. I’ve certainly had some interesting “daddy adventures” in my brief career of being a father, and I’m not foolish enough (anymore) to think that I know or have seen it all as a dad. When I’m … Continue reading

Parenting Techniques Outside of the United States

The things that you consider to be typical parenting techniques might seem strange to people who live outside of the United States. Likewise, some of what parents in other countries do may seem weird to parents here. It’s all a matter of perspective. It was written by Emily Lodish and posted on August 12, 2014. In it, she points out some parenting techniques that are commonly practiced in … Continue reading

There was a lot of ground covered this week and we’re heading into the end of October and beginning of November. Next month marks my baby’s 6th birthday and I keep wondering how we got so far, so fast. Still, I get to relive some of the great moments and share my memories here in the baby blog. So without further ado, here is our Baby blog week in … Continue reading

Daddy Time

Just about every study done on bonding and attachment seems focused on moms and their children. Few researchers have taken a look at the father-child attachment issues, but there are some findings that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The fact is that the father-child bond is as important as the mother-child bond. Da Da The more actively involved a father is the higher the score of six month olds on motor and mental development tests. For babies who have their daddy handling the most mundane of daily activities including feeding, giving baths, dressing and changing diapers handle stressful … Continue reading

The Magic of Dad

Too often we get caught up in the needs of new moms and new babies that we forget how magical the relationship is between dad and baby. When my daughter was a baby, there were evenings when she was inconsolable, when she just didn’t want to sleep or eat or whatever it was she was being stubborn about. This started as early as 8 to 10 weeks. As most new moms can attest, this is not the most patient time for us. We’re usually exhausted and running on very little sleep. It can also be stressful when baby refuses to … Continue reading
