Family Time at the Zoo

What could be more fun for a family with young children than a trip to the zoo? My family is lucky that we live only a few miles from the Bronx Zoo. It makes it very convenient to visit the zoo for a couple of hours or an afternoon. In fact, my wife and I decided to become members of the zoo so that we wouldn’t feel obligated to make an all day excursion out of a trip to the zoo. One thing that I would suggest is that you only consider going to the zoo when your children are … Continue reading

California Town Begins Accessibility Upgrades

A few months ago, a lawsuit was filed against a town in California that had violated the Americans With Disabilities Act. Now, the town has officially begun making the improvements to their playground that should have been made in the first place. Better late than never! The Americans With Disabilities Act, or ADA, requires businesses, restaurants, and other public places to have bathrooms that are large enough for a person to easily fit a wheelchair into. It requires there to be ramps and elevators alongside places that have stairs. It requires that sidewalks be a certain size, and that the … Continue reading

Make Camping Cool

Camping is a great way to bond with family and friends, but not everyone loves roughing it in the great outdoors. Teenagers are especially reluctant to unplug from their daily digital lives in order to commune with nature on a family vacation. However, there are ways you can make camping fun for the entire clan. Being prepared for an extended stay outdoors is one way you can reduce apprehension and anxiety associated with camping. Before you even leave your driveway, check the weather forecast. If Mother Nature looks like she will be raining on your camping parade, you might consider … Continue reading

Cleaning For Company

It’s time for holiday guests. As much as I would like my house to be spotless when my guests arrive I know that working full time makes a spotless house something of a fantasy. Instead I’ve learned to make it good enough. If you are having company that will sit in the living room and visit, is it really necessary to wipe down the refrigerator shelves? I think not. Here is my quickie list to get ready for company when I don’t have time to deep clean. *Shut the doors to all rooms and closets your guests will not see. … Continue reading

Advantages of Pregnancy

There are many advantages to being pregnant, and I’m not talking about the adorable bundle of joy you get out of the deal. For the six months or so that you are visibly pregnant, that belly is like a free spin, the wild card, a “get out of jail free” card. You can get through crowds. Pregnant woman can part the red sea (or a crowd) simply by saying “excuse me.” As soon as one person sees you are expecting, it’s a domino effect and everyone gets out of your way. This is particularly useful when you are trying to … Continue reading

Parents and Public Restroom Problems

Do you take your young son to the ladies’ room when he has to tinkle? Does your husband take your young daughter to the men’s room when she has to go “NOW! Daddy!” It’s a common problem among parents: knowing when a child is old enough to use gender-appropriate public restrooms. The family bathroom, which offers extra unisexual space for parents and their children, is not found in every store and restaurant. Meaning, at some point, moms and dads have to decide if it is wiser to bring their son into the ladies’ room or their daughter into a men’s … Continue reading

For the Girls: What Is the Right Age to Start Shaving Your Legs?

I was in sixth grade when my holiday gift haul included an electric razor. Unlike some of my friends, I hadn’t yet been teased about my leg hair — one friend was horribly embarrassed when a boy commented that her legs were hairier than his! Is there a right time to start shaving your legs? Really, it’s different for every girl. Some things to consider: Do YOU feel self-conscious about your body hair? Is the hair on your legs thick and dark, or light and fine? Are other people making you feel self-conscious about body hair? The earlier you start … Continue reading

“Slumdog” Star’s Parent Could Use Some Help

I can’t stop thinking about the father of the “Slumdog Millionaire” star, who is accused of kicking his 10-year-old son because he refused to grant an interview to a reporter who was planning to pay for the kid to talk. It’s bad enough that the crazed father thrashed his superstar son in front of dozens of witnesses, but to then blame others for his actions is reprehensible, in my opinion. Apparently in Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail’s father’s public apology he took aim at “Slumdog” producer Christian Colson saying that if the loaded Hollywood exec made good on his promise to provide … Continue reading

Cleaning and Polishing Wood Floors

One of the things that have stumped me the most is caring for our wood floors. We love hardwood floors because of their beauty and the fact that they don’t promote allergies or asthma, the way traditional carpeting does. We had hardwood floors in our last home, and we have them in this one (with the exception of the the family room, the kitchen and the bathrooms). Over the years, I have tried a few different things to get the hardwood floors clean and looking beautiful. When we were showing our home, potential buyers commented on how lovely our floors … Continue reading
