Celebrity Parents: "For the Sake of the Children"

by Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger

So here's the deal: Actress Jaime Pressly just confirmed that she and her fiance Eric Cubiche have officially separated and will likely stay that way permanently.

No major headline there considering splits in Tinseltown are a dime a dozen.

Here's what makes their situation unique: The couple has an 18-month-old son named Dezi whom they conceived during their 9-year "friendship" that evolved into a 2-year engagement. According to Pressly, the couple plans to "remain close friends as we both adore our son and want to make sure he knows we both love him more than life."

So essentially the "My Name is Earl" star and her DJ boyfriend have split, yet according to Pressly, they are "together every day with Dezi and still love each other very much."

Huh?

Let me get this straight: Pressly and Cubiche "love each other very much" and are "together every day with Dezi," but they are no longer interested in being a "couple."

I'm confused.

They've known each other for nearly a decade; they "love" each other, planned to get hitched; and have a child together. Yet, they no longer want to be in a relationship with each other. But, they spend every day together with their son.

Hmmm...

Earlier this week the 31-year-old actress insisted to news reporters that both she and her son's father would "do anything" for the sake of their child.

I guess marrying or remaining together doesn't qualify as "anything"--that was my first thought. Then, upon further reflection I considered another interpretation of Pressly's comments.

Who knows what the couple's true feelings are? Celebrities constantly throw around the obligatory "we remain close friends" line when explaining relationship splits to the media. If Pressly and Cubiche have separated they obviously don't share that great a love for each other. In fact, for all we know they can't stand each other and the only reason they tolerate being in the same room with one another is because they would "do anything" for the sake of their child.

Would you spend time with your enemy for the sake of your child?
