Concerns of Public Education: H = Home Lives

One of the many concerns of public education begins with the letter H. H equals the concern of the children’s home lives. Thankfully, I have never been placed in the position where I believed that one of my students was being abused or harmed. However, I have known of some less than desirable home living situations. I have had children come to me each day covered in filth. Many of these children get up each morning either on their own or with the help of an older sibling. Mom or dad is still in bed and does not see what … Continue reading

Character Education Begins At Home

What is character education? Character education is the teaching of virtues. To many people the word virtue has an old-fashioned and negative connotation. Yet the lack of basic virtues is what is causing our society to crumble. Because children are not being taught character education in the home. Shouldn’t something with the word education in it be taught at school? Although character education is taught in schools it is not always the education that you want your child to receive. Plus if virtues are not reinforced and modeled at home the child will not exhibit good character, or positive virtues, … Continue reading

Journey to the Center of… Your Intestines

Sounds gross, but if you are looking for an educational vacation destination suitable for (most of) your family I might just have the golden ticket. You’ll have to fly to the Netherlands to get in, but according to the creators of “Corpus,” the combination amusement park/health museum, your efforts will be justly rewarded. The new family-friendly attraction opened in Oegstgeest (located 21 miles southeast of Amsterdam) two weeks ago and the site is already overflowing with visitors. The structure is home to a 115-foot high seated human figure and all the walls and halls are modeled with fiberglass to resemble … Continue reading

What Value Do You Put On Family?

How much time do you spend with your family? Is it more than three minutes a day, one to one? Karen Kingsbury in the after word of her novel ‘Family’ which is part of the Firstborn series, claims ‘national statistics say that most parents spend only three minutes each day having one-on-one time with their kids.’ As I read that sentence I found it hard to believe, perhaps because family has always been important to me. My husband and I made the decision early in our marriage that we would rather have a less spacious house in a less affluent … Continue reading

Types Of Boarding Schools

In my previous article, I discussed the basic characteristics of a boarding school. In this article, I will address the various types of boarding schools that students may attend. All Boarding Schools The most common type of boarding school that comes to mind is the all boarding school. In all boarding schools, all of the students are boarders. All students live on campus. Boarding Day Schools At a boarding day school, most students live on campus. However, students who live nearby or in a nearby neighborhood may choose to travel on a daily basis. Five-Day Boarding Schools At a five-day … Continue reading

Signs of a Dangerous or Distressed Child

With much school violence circling our society, I began wondering why teachers are not given more instruction on how to identify a potentially dangerous child. I also pondered on why teachers are not supported when they report a child that they feel is potentially dangerous. Many people believe that because I work with five and six year old children, I do not encounter potentially dangerous or emotional distressed children. However, I believe that violent behaviors begin early. People do not start with murder. Violence begins in a minor state and gradually increases. Many children who commit school violence begin by … Continue reading

Fun with Oobleck

One scientific mystery that I have seen enjoyed by students in pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade is the creation of Oobleck. Oobleck can be a very fun experiment to try when studying the phases of matter. The lesson’s objectives can be condensed to fit any age level. If used with small children try reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss before the project begins. The Recipe for Oobleck (enough for six groups of students to investigate) Ingredient List Large mixing bowl 4 boxes of cornstarch 6 ¾ cups of water 15 drops of food coloring (Oobleck is usually made … Continue reading

Get Everyone Involved

As I’ve said before, home tasks cause the most amount of stress for me. scheduling home tasks is one way for me to relieve some of the stress here and letting go of your perfectionism to free up time and let go of stress. Just remember you’ve already been doing it all, now you can do it in manageable pieces. Another way to help relieve some of the stress of home tasks is to get everyone in the household involved. Now granted, a baby can’t help with these tasks, but you’d be amazed at the things a toddler and up … Continue reading

Be Firm

It is so easy to give into our children’s desires especially when they are crying in the supermarket or hanging on your leg. Yet giving into our children actually gives them power over us as parents. As parents we need to be firm with our expectations and rules. Our children need to know that they are expected to follow the rules. Being firm is one of the ten characteristics that can be found in a happy family. Today’s generation more than any other has their desires and wishes met. I read a report recently that said that today’s children have … Continue reading

Family Values Statements

As parents, we try to teach our kids values on a daily basis. One way to do this is by example. Many families take it a step further and actually create a written family values statement. Similar to a company’s mission statement, your family values statement is a written set of beliefs and behavior guidelines that everyone in your family agrees to live by. To write your family values statement everyone will need to be involved in the process. A good time to work on it is during family meetings, if you have them. If not, you will have to … Continue reading
