Baby Blog Week in Review: August 7 to August 11

We have had a busy week in the baby blog! If you haven’t had time to catch up on all your reading, here it is all in one place. Grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! August 7 Why Banning Formula Isn’t Awful This week the New York City Department of Health banned free formula in New York City public hospitals in an effort to promote breastfeeding. The internet has been abuzz about the ban both for and against it. Although I actively promote breastfeeding when possible, I actually think that banning formula is good economic sense. The Pets Blog Week in Review for Feb 19-25

Presidents’ Day, Mardi Gras, and Ash Wednesday … ah, there was a lot going on in the “real world” last week, but what about in the Pets Blog? Miss anything? If so, here’s a recap of what Aimee and myself covered: Monday, February 19 Monday was Presidents’ Day. What better way to pay respect Pets Blog style than with a virtual trip to the Presidential Pet Museum to Hail the Resident Pets in Chief? (Of the many interesting facts I learned, the one that struck me the most was how pet-friendly our Leaders in Chief are or have been. Only … Continue reading

Characteristics Of A Good Mother

There are many mothers in the world, both good and bad. I have seen mothers that I wish that I could be more like and those that I think should never have had children in the first place. But what exactly makes a woman a good mother? Anthropologist Margaret Mead has spent years studying children, parents, and the methods used by mothers raising children all over the world. When asked what she considered the most “valuable capacities for a mother to have.” She replied by giving five qualities that she feels every good mother must possess. 1. Treats each child … Continue reading

Behavior Characteristics: For People Affected By Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

One of the most important things parents are advised is to be firm and consistent with our children, especially when it comes to behaviors. Natural consequences, time out, and other types of discipline are all common ways parents attempt to teach children behavior boundaries. I have 4 children, and with 3 of them standard, ordinary, logical parenting approaches have been very effective. However, I also have one child who was exposed to alcohol before her birth and suffers from Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND) A physical disability of the brain. For this child parenting is a completely different story and … Continue reading

What Should A Good Parent’s Priorities Be?

I asked my husband “What should a good parent’s priorities be?” His first response was “The well-being of their children.” Yet many leading experts say that a parent’s first priority should be to their spouse. Why? The reason is simple if you have a good marriage you are more likely to be a good parent. Counselor Peter Gerlach found that in consulting with over 1,000 couples that those who do not make their marriage a priority ultimately fail. We all know what divorce does to kids. So a parent’s first priority should be to their marriage. Andrew Mullins, author of … Continue reading

Pages for Pooches

Or kittens, iguanas, birds, bunnies, and fish. Regardless of the type of pet you own, there’s a good bet that he or she is a treasured member of your family. So, why not document this special relationship by creating an entire scrapbook to commemorate your most cherished memories together? If the project seems a bit overwhelming, consider purchasing a pet-themed scrapbooking kit. Several companies sell collections of paper and embellishments (including stickers, die cuts, stamps and brads) with various pet themes, from farm to jungle animals, and of course, traditional domesticated pups and cats. Some of the cuter offerings I’ve … Continue reading

The Genetics of Taste

For as long as I can remember, I have been attracted to salty foods. In fact as soon as I decided to write this blog post about how genetics can influence whether a person is drawn to salty foods, I was hit by a strong desire to run to the kitchen and make a bowl of popcorn, which I am now happily munching. For years, I have attributed my love of salt to the fact that growing up, there was never a salt shaker on the table at my house because my dad has high blood pressure. I just thought … Continue reading

What is Triple Negative Intra – Ductal Breast Cancer?

So what is triple negative intra-ductal breast cancer? Well it is rather complicated but I am going to try my best to explain it. If you have any other questions email me or post a comment and I will get back to you with what I can. When women under 40 develop breast cancer their cancers tend to have different characteristics than an older person. Although I tend to generalize by saying women, breast cancer affects men too, I apologize for my generalization. The majority of breast cancer patients have tumors that “fed” by estrogen, progesterone, or human growth hormone. … Continue reading

Sensible Gift Giving

For the people in your life that have way too many “things” consider giving sensibly this year. Americans love to spend money and buy “things”. They enjoy buying for themselves, as well as others. Even though it is a very generous and thoughtful characteristic to have, it is not practical. Over time these “things” add up and you either have to donate to charity frequently, throw things away or store them away just in case you “may need it someday”. Even though it is very cute, your mother does not need another knick-knack. She probably also does not need another … Continue reading

The Importance of Parents

I was touched today as I listened to the afternoon session of General Conference as Elder L. Tom Perry talked about the importance of parents in teaching children the valuable lessons in life. I loved how he gave examples of his own mother and the wonderful things she did to enrich her family members and teach them both temporal and spiritual lessons. Her “overpreparation” never went to waste, as she dedicated her time to teaching her children as well as her Relief Society sisters. I also have a mother, who has gone above and beyond in all her church callings, … Continue reading
