The Cotton Ball Diet is Dangerous

There have been many diets that sound a bit extreme – but that do involve actual food. The cotton ball diet, however, encourages people to eat a non-food item that their bodies cannot break down or gain nutrition from. The purpose of this diet, like all diets, is weight loss. It is important to know that the cotton ball diet is very dangerous! There are certain times of the year in which a lot of people suddenly decide to go on a diet. One is shortly before summer, when people decide they want to lose weight in order to look … Continue reading

Most Teens Hide What They Do Online

A few months ago I attended a parenting class at my church. One of the dads was expressing how it is our job to monitor our teen’s use of technology. Of course that makes sense, right? But as I pointed out, it isn’t always so easy. Let’s face it…teens usually know more about technology than we do. That means they can get around things. For instance, some parents look at the computer’s history to see which websites their children have been on. But most kids know how to clear out their history. A recent survey from McAfee found that 71% … Continue reading

Dangerous Websites for Teens

I saw a report a couple of weeks ago regarding dangerous websites that teens are visiting. One of them is called “Formspring,” which is actually a social media outlet that allows members to ask and respond to anonymous questions. The problem with this website is that it also promotes cyber-bullying. Vicious notes can be sent anonymously. This opens the door to all kinds of bullying like obscene language, derogatory comments and other unkind ways of interacting. I wanted to personally look more into this website but it required signing up and I wasn’t quite ready for that. However it is … Continue reading

Teen Blogging: Beware!

Blogging isn’t just for us adult techno-geeks anymore! If you haven’t heard of MySpace.com, the number one (but certainly not the only) free blogging website used by teens today, chances are your pre-teen or teenager has! Some statistics suggest that children ages 13 – 17 make up over half of all internet bloggers today! Children as young as 9 and 10 years old are making themselves at home on these free blog websites, creating homepages filled with every personal detail including photos, lists of hobbies and interests, family details, location and income details and, frequently, blogs containing up to date … Continue reading

Health Dangers for Videogame Junkies

I have to admit that I do have a videogame junkie living in my home. If I don’t monitor and control his playing time, we could probably go days without hearing a peep from him. While the obsession with playing videogames is oftentimes something joked about, the recent health scare of a 15-year-old in Ohio should raise the alarm. After spending four days in his bedroom playing the game, “Modern Warfare 3,” he ended up having to be hospitalized for dehydration. He was so consumed with playing that he wasn’t getting enough liquids. It was so serious that he actually … Continue reading

Keeping Kids Safe Online

When you are a single parent your child may spend more time unsupervised than you would like, it’s important to teach them basic safety. One of the big areas that you need to be concerned with is the internet. While there are many good things online, education things, there are other things that can be harmful if your child ventures in unsupervised. Everyone has heard stories of online predators and bullies, so how do we protect our kids? I think the most important thing you can do it talk with your children. Before they go online the first time it … Continue reading

The Demise of Our Culture?

I was watching an interview with a Fox News contributor and author, Laura Ingraham, who was talking about her newest book, “Of Thee I Zing.” Apparently her book is about the demise of our culture. There was a person on this show who totally agreed with everything she was saying and there was another one who didn’t. One of the comments made is how each generation says the same thing, how much worse kids are “today” than they were “in my time.” Even back in the 50’s during the time of “I Love Lucy,” when a married couple depicted on … Continue reading

Internet Child-Proofing

As I sit in front of my computer trying to make a few deadlines, I am interrupted by that all too familiar ding of email hitting my inbox. It’s not my close friend from Texas shooting the breeze nor is it my Mother reminding me to remind her when my son’s next soccer game is. This time it’s a report generated automatically and sent to both my husband and I from my children’s computer letting me know exactly what they are doing online. Snooping? Maybe. But I’m not really interested in reading their private emails or visiting the websites they … Continue reading
