Family

Ever feel like a chicken with its head cut off? That’s what December does to me. I’ve always gone a little bit crazy at Christmas and as a single mother I kept all those crazy traditions, the difference now is that I have to do everything myself. As stressful as it can be at times I love every minute of it. And there is a little selfish part of me that’s glad I don’t have to share the fun stuff with someone else. Yes, putting the tree up alone is kind of a pain sometimes but making hot chocolate and … Continue reading

Diffusing Family Drama during the Holidays

When my children were younger, it was so much easier to shield them from certain things…for instance, family drama. For the most part they weren’t aware of some of the “interesting” behavior that sometimes transpired between family members. Now that they are teens, well, they are more than aware of what happens. In fact, now they have an attitude of “So what is it going to be this holiday?” I really hate that. I mean, it grieves my heart that my children have to wonder what new drama will unfold. But family never lets them down…sure enough, our Thanksgiving started … Continue reading

Missing Christmases Past

Every once-in-a-while I get in this mood where I really, really miss the old days. This Christmas I couldn’t help but reflect on how much more fun it was when my children were younger. I remember relatives excitedly coming over, bearing huge loads of presents. Its not that the amount of presents made it enjoyable but the sheer excitement of seeing small hands tear into the paper. I loved the squeals of delight, giggles and laughter that often erupted from them. This Christmas my children received money from everyone. They didn’t get one single present to unwrap. It’s not that … Continue reading

The Best Tradition of Christmas: Being Together

Christmas traditions in my family have changed over the years. When the kids were little, we always opened gifts on Christmas Eve. Now they receive money ahead of time and get to spend it however they wish. My youngest spends it as soon as it touches his fingers, my daughter waits until she can get to the mall and my oldest holds onto it for a while. Another tradition we had when they were younger was to read stories like “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Now we play games like Uno, Apples to Apples or Catch Phrase. We used to … Continue reading

Great Gift Idea for Your Teen

I have a GREAT gift idea for your teen…earphones, but not just any kind of earphones. I am very impressed with a pair that I received free-of-charge. I was asked to provide a review on dB Logic earphones which are priced at $34.95. Let me tell you that they are worth the cost. In fact, I was so impressed with them that I plan on purchasing a couple of more for my other children. The biggest reason I like these earphones is because they actually protect your hearing while you listen. I cannot tell you the number of times I … Continue reading

St. Nick’s Tradition Continues

Yes, St. Nick made a stop at my house, despite the fact that my children are just a few months from turning 13, 15 and 18. I personally don’t believe you can be too old for magic. Okay, they don’t actually believe in St. Nick. But perhaps it really is time to put the kibosh on this annual celebration. After all, who puts in requests for St. Nick items? My children do. Still…I have so much fun filling those stockings. But with the way some attitudes had been going around, I was threatening to cancel St. Nick. Then at one … Continue reading
