Do Holidays Make You Homesick?

Even thought you're the mom or dad now, do you miss the days of being a kid and looking forward to what your parents or extended family members would plan for the holidays? Maybe you're strolling down Memory Lane remembering all the wonderful times you had as a child.

If you live far away from family and childhood friends and can't get together with loved ones for the holidays, you might be feeling a little nostalgic. The best way to ease those feelings is to reconnect in some way with the people you love.

Phone calls are great and with today's cell phone and long distance plans, you could probably spend hours on the phone for little if any extra expense. It's good to hear your loved ones voices and to catch up, laugh, or just say, "I was thinking about you; I miss you."

Technology gives us so many ways to keep in touch. Email is another great option. Still, there is something to be said for a hand written letter. It shows that you put time and effort into your words. It's something tangible that family members or friends can hold onto.

stationery note cards envelopes Take some time to write a really great letter and send it soon. Hopefully, you'll get one in return. I love doing this, and I really love getting notes from my mom, because they smell like her. Some of the perfume on her wrist must be absorbed by the paper as she writes. It's just the faintest scent, but it touches me. Scents can be some of the strongest triggers for memories, and getting a whiff of my mom's perfume as I open an envelope makes me feel closer to her. We talk on the phone all the time, but the scent of her perfume and the sight of the words in her handwriting have meaning for me too.

Pick up some great stationary, envelopes, and note cards to get you in the mood to write. Letter writing seems to be a lost art, but there's no reason we can't bring it back, starting with this year's holiday season.
