When There Aren’t Enough Hands to Do His Work

I came home from ward council last night feeling a little depressed. I think the feeling was mutual among everyone there. It was probably because our Bishop seemed sad and frustrated about our efforts in the ward with home teaching, visiting teaching, and trying to reach out to others. There frankly are way too many less active people in our ward and not enough active people to visit them all. This leaves a great burden on those that are active to try to reach out. But, what was worrying our bishop was that those active people were also feeling left … Continue reading

If You Want Something Done Right …

We’ve all heard the adage, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” It’s so true. No one can live up to our expectations. It’s not that our way is the most superior—it’s just that we want it done that way, and it’s hard not to get irked when you have an idea and you can’t get someone else to catch your vision. Nowhere is this more true than in a home situation. I’m a busy gal and I’m not always able to get the housework done that I would like, and so my husband, wonderful guy that he … Continue reading

The Exclusive Club

My daughter plays with older kids. By older, I mean a couple of years over five. Really, really old. These children play beautifully together, and I am really grateful. There are a number of only children in the mix and I think that it is especially wonderful that they get the time together, acting as one giant sort of family. Except sometimes I’m not. There is an abundance of girls in the place where we live, and there are just a few boys. The boys act like little brothers, teasing the girls, chasing them, taking their stuff. Just the things … Continue reading

Adoptions: Non-Refundable?

I’ve always loved children. I’ve been babysitting my whole life, went to school to become an elementary grade school teacher, and taught preschool for two years after graduating. Since becoming a mother, I look at children in a totally different light. Before, kids were just kids. I liked them, and most of them were fun. However, some were cute, some weren’t as cute; some were brats, some were angels. Now, when I see a child, I think to myself, “Someone carried that child in her belly for 9 months. Someone gave birth to that baby. Someone probably loves that child … Continue reading

Don’t Take Teen Attitudes Personally

As much as we may not like it, teen attitude is normal behavior. Almost all teenagers go through a period where we love them but let’s face it; we have a harder time liking them. Rather, I should say that we have a harder time liking their behavior. It’s important that we don’t make things personal when our teenagers are going through those more difficult stages. Expressing to a teen, “I don’t like the way you’re acting” is much better than “I don’t like you.” Even if we don’t come right out and say those words we may be demonstrating … Continue reading
