Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

Re-Evaluating Your Cold Weather Fashion

The only upside of having to endure this week’s brutally bitter, inhumane winter temperatures (we’re talking 30 below wind chills, folks) is that families can score cheap food from McDonald’s. Thanks to Ronald’s “Cold Days, Hot Deals” promotion, parents can save some cash by purchasing one Big Mac at the regular price and getting the second for the price of the previous day’s noon temperature. For example, if the mercury only gets up to 3 degrees today, then tomorrow, the price of a second Big Mac will be a mere 3 cents. What’s more, if the mercury doesn’t climb above … Continue reading

Daycare Uniforms

During the week my 6-year-old takes less than five minutes selecting her outfit and getting dressed for school. She marches out of the house at 8 a.m. sharp sporting either navy blue slacks and a white sweater or a navy blue jumper and a red sweater. Oh, the joys of school uniforms. Maybe it’s because I too attended a Catholic school, which required wearing the same navy blue and white combo, that I am able to appreciate the simplicity uniforms bring to chaotic weekday mornings. Being a slave to uniforms for nearly a decade also makes me intimately aware of … Continue reading

Do You Have a Mommy Uniform?

What do you wear to drop off your kids at school in the morning? Is it the same outfit you wear to the supermarket, the pet store or the gas station? I tend to dress in the same outfit to do all of the aforementioned tasks—-jeans or khakis with a plain button-down shirt or sweater. My wardrobe is simple, easy to clean, and yes, rather boring. However, at least it won’t get me banned from stores. In England, a couple of grocery stores are cracking down on moms who shop in slumpy, dumpy outfits that resemble nightwear. You know exactly … Continue reading

When Your Child Won’t Go To Sleep

If your child has difficulty falling and staying asleep, it can be tremendously frustrating. That’s because if your child is awake during the night, you will be, too. If your tranquil evenings are constantly interrupted by a child who gets out of bed, cries, or insists on sleeping with Mom and Dad, things can get miserable fast. Special needs children are especially prone to sleeping difficulties. Here are some tips to help your child get to sleep: 1. Don’t allow your child to have sugary foods or drinks at least two hours before bedtime. If your child has bedwetting problems, … Continue reading

Money-Saving Mom Moves

School starts here in just a few weeks. Never mind that Target and Wal-Mart erected their school supply displays on the day after Fourth of July. “Mommy, is summer over?” my 7-year-old asked as we strolled by the cases of new pencils, pens and binders on JULY 5th. For weeks, I’ve resisted going near those aisles. I’m dreading having to dig deep to purchase all new supplies, plus uniforms, shoes, and the 17,000 other accessories that students need to tackle a new academic year. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to snap out of my denial phase pretty soon. Sure, my … Continue reading

The Nightgown

When we were getting everything ready for Jessie to have her tonsils and adenoids removed Grammy and Poppa sent a package to cheer her up during her recovery. The package included the cutest book about if whales have wings. (Jessie will tell you that no, they don’t.) The package also contained an adorable nightgown. I don’t wear nightgowns. I don’t like nightgowns. Nightgowns are weird. They get twisty at night, are really uncomfortable, and aren’t cute. Jammies are cute. Even a shirt is cute. Nightgowns are annoying. Since I’m a little biased against nightgowns, I didn’t show this adorable nightie … Continue reading

Seeing Red

Yesterday I saw red… in more ways than one. In honor of Read Across America Day, March 2, the birthday of the beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, my kindergartner’s school encouraged all students to dress in red and white. My daughter attends a Catholic school that requires students dress in uniform, so having a “free day” to wear red and white garb is a big deal for the kids. The night before the big Dr. Seuss birthday celebration (which included cooking green eggs and ham in the classroom) my daughter and I went through her closet to find a … Continue reading

Author Interview: Sandra Grey, the Conclusion

Thank you for joining us for our third and final installment of our interview with LDS author Sandra Grey. If you missed parts one or two, click here to get caught up. Sandra, you just released your first novel, “Traitor.” How long did it take you to write this book? I wrote the first draft in six months. But of course the first draft is not the entire process. I began writing in the middle of September 2005 and “Traitor” was finally ready for publication (including several months of rewrites, edits, waiting for cover design, title decisions, and reviews, etc.) … Continue reading

Gift Ideas for Military Children

It’s Christmas time and you know you need to find that special gift for your military child. But what do you get? Being in the military means, dealing with deployment and having to figure out some great ways to keep your children feeling secure about where daddy is and keeping them close. This isn’t always an easy task, but I’ve listed a few things I’ve done that would make great holiday gifts. Daddy Dolls- Okay, this isn’t something I can make and thank goodness there is actually a company that makes them. What are they? My husband wouldn’t be caught … Continue reading
