Is Your Home on Lock Down?

Today, as I was walking to my daughter’s school to pick her up, I glanced to my right at the top of my street and noticed that there were about a dozen cop cars. I asked a bystander what was going on, and he didn’t know, but said that guns were drawn. I immediately worried about getting my daughter from school even though it was in the opposite direction. I soon found out that her school was on lock-down. As I walked to school, I just knew that everything was going to be fine. I said a little prayer we … Continue reading

Capri Sun Mom

Capri Sun. Capri Sun! That’s the product helicopter mom is trying to sell in the hilarious new commercial I posted about a few days ago. It finally came to me. Okay, it wasn’t a profound revelation, nor did my memory suddenly spark the answer; rather, I happened to catch the ad again while doing the dinner dishes last night. Believe me; this commercial is going to blow up parenting blogs in the not-so distant future. It’s that relatable. If you haven’t already seen it, you can catch helicopter mom in all her obsessive glory here. Darn if you don’t crack … Continue reading

We Are All New At Parenting

It’s such a beautiful day today. I took a walk around my neighborhood just enjoying the day, watching all the little ones out playing in the sunshine as their mom’s hovered close by. It’s so cute to watch people interact with their toddlers. We all try to reason and use logic and all that toddler can think is I. Want. it. Now. As I walked I saw one of the moms shoot me an embarrassed smile as her tiny little one threw a tantrum. I smiled back, thinking how hard we all are on ourselves as mothers. We want our … Continue reading

Too Much TV

How much TV do your kids watch? What do they watch? I remember when I was first divorced, sometimes the TV was my lifesaver. Being the only parent of an only child meant that not only was I the only one doing housework and laundry, cooking and paying bills, I was also the only other person in the house to entertain her. I hate to admit it but many times I parked Hailey in front of the TV when she wanted me to play a game with her or read a book with her, anything, she just wanted my time … Continue reading

The Influence of Older Siblings on Preschoolers

A preschooler is blessed to have older siblings. A big sister is great for reading bedtime stories, doing hair and laughing. A big brother will play all day outside, let you win, and doesn’t mind if you get dirty. A sweet relationship develops between older and younger siblings. There are trying times, challenges, and disagreements but in the end a bond is formed that cannot be broken. Most big brothers and sisters have no intention of being a poor influence on their younger siblings. Many times what is acceptable and age appropriate for an older sibling is not acceptable or … Continue reading

Doing the “Dad” thing

When I was a kid I remember watching the cheesy sitcoms that might appear throughout any given week on television. Many of the popular ones when I was growing up were centered around a family with children. The Dad would do dad-type things and the Mom would do mom-type things and the kids would do kid-type things. The episodes would generally focus on someone doing something wrong and then learning a lesson in the end. All of these shows ultimately affirmed, quite happily, that families are more important than any problems that might arise between the individual members. At any … Continue reading

Is Your Home-Based Work Working for Your Family?

Working from home can be a wonderful way for parents to make staying home to care for children make economic sense for their families. Although that is a good thing, it can sometimes be difficult for a parent who is staying home to raise children to decide how to integrate working from home into the rhythm of their days. There is no one set formula for deciding how much work to take on, how many hours to work each day or each week, when to work during the day, or anything else. Add to this the fact that the appropriate … Continue reading

Watch What You Say

The first time I realized that I need to be careful about what I say in front of my kids was when my two year old said the word, crap. For me, it was like she said a swear word since that is about the worst word that I say. But, in reality, as parents, we should always be watching what we say in front of them. Especially now that my daughter is older, she is not only internalizing words I say, but complete ideas, thoughts, and overall feelings. Several months ago, my son was following his big sis around … Continue reading

I’m the Mean Mom

If my eleven-year-old is to believed, my rules are just too strict. My kids can’t watch Star Wars until they’re ten, and they can’t watch Indiana Jones until they’re twelve, even though Lego makes toys from these shows, and that proves they’re good for kids, right? In addition, we’re LDS, and we believe in keeping the Sabbath day holy. With five and half inches of new snow on the ground on Sunday, it’s tempting to go out and sled or build a snowman, but my son has to wait until Monday. None of his friends have to wait. Why, if … Continue reading
