Getting Out of a Fitness Slump

Are you in a fitness slump? Anyone who has been exercising for any amount of time tends to hit these at some point or another. Coming out of a long winter for some, you may have been feeling the monotony of working out at the gym, running on your treadmill and using the stationary bike. But with warmer weather comes the chance to get out of the same-old, same-old and try something new. Being stuck indoors can put anyone in a fitness slump. There is just something about fresh air that gets the blood coursing. Get outside and walk or … Continue reading

Falling into a Slump?

Fall is here and for many that means sinus and allergy season is in full swing. Sinus pressure sets in and your head pounds. Taking allergy medicine only makes you want to sleep. Soon a little sinus trouble turns into a sinus infection. All the pressure and misery makes you feel like sleeping or just sitting and waiting for your allergy medicine to kick in. Once it does you may feel like sleeping the day away. Soon you realize you missed a day of working out. One day leads to two days and two days leads to three and so … Continue reading

Mid-year Goals

I am in total shock that it is already August. Where did this year go? In a couple months the fall and winter holidays begin and before we know it, it will be 2012! Pondering this on a drive home from my camping trip last week, I decided to make some mid-year goals to help me get back on track. Earlier in the summer when my teaching job ended, I got back into major workout mode with spinning class, hiking 2-3 times a week, elliptical at least twice a week, etc. However, with some stress and other factors that creeped … Continue reading

End of the Year Slump

Every year I notice a pattern, the end of the year slump. For my son’s first year of high school that meant his grades went down some. I am very thankful that although he is antsy about the school year ending, his grades remain good. I have come to notice something else though. It’s not just my children that get into the end of the year slump. I tend to do the same. I guess I get to that point where I am ready for it all to end—the early mornings, getting everyone up, chauffeuring, driving from one activity to … Continue reading

How Does an Independent Church Find a New Pastor?

At the beginning of this year, the Pastor of our church resigned. Many of the church members felt that his resignation had been coming for a long time. The church has been in a “slump” lately. It was pretty obvious that people in the church were getting discouraged with the lack of growth in numbers and, perhaps, spiritually. Our Pastor has been in our church for thirteen years, so he has had a strong influence on the style and tone of the service, as well as the attitudes of people in the church. Since it is an Independent Baptist Church, … Continue reading

A Review of This Week’s Parenting Blogs

I am borrowing an idea from Heather Long and reviewing the week in Parenting. There have been some great blogs written on some important topics. But often parents only see the first few blogs and miss the rest. So here is a review of this week’s Parenting topics. Monday September 18th. “Teaching Good Judgment” is an important skill that many parents fail to teach their children. This is obvious by the many teens and young adults that are making such bad decisions. Read this blog for some ideas on how you can teach your child good judgment. “Should Partners Of … Continue reading

Summer Reading Series: Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet

What do Three Billy Goats Gruff and Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet have in common? Believe it or not; an important lesson in parenting. Allow me to explain. A few months ago, my daughter’s second grade class decided to put on a play. Yup. Three Billy Goats Gruff. Tryouts were held and my seven-year-old did her best to score the part she had her heart set on: Baby Goat. Fortunately, I had enough time to emotionally prepare her in case she didn’t get the coveted role. “That’s okay, Mommy,” she reasoned “if I don’t get to be the Baby … Continue reading

The Benefits of Yoga

With the first week of the New Year underway, many are looking at ways to get fit. In my last couple of blogs I talked about the benefits of cardio and flexibility exercises. In this blog we are going to look at the benefits of yoga. First, you might want to know what exactly yoga is. It originates in India, attributed to the Hindus, as a way to discipline oneself physically, mentally and spiritually. Now because of my religious beliefs, I don’t get into the “spiritual” aspect of it, although for some this may be just what they want. So … Continue reading

The Recession and Red Butts

What does the slumping economy have to do with the color of your baby’s behind? According to a new report by the Business Insider, one begets the other. The economic geniuses at the business publication have been making headlines with their hypothesis on the correlation between a near record number of recent diaper rash cases and the recession. If you have a child in diapers, then you may already be familiar with the red butt/recession theory. Apparently, there are millions of parents out there who are trying to save a few extra bucks by letting their children linger in wet … Continue reading

Exercise and the Single Mother

It’s amazing the toll that pregnancy can take on our bodies. Before I had my son I could eat anything I wanted and it never showed. I could eat ice cream all day every day if I wanted and no one would know the difference. After my son was born reality set in. My metabolism just wasn’t what it used to be, my body would never be the same again. I didn’t have a lot of trouble with the initial baby weight coming off, but no matter what I did my body just didn’t look the same anymore. Pregnancy had … Continue reading
