Write Down Your Family Recipes

Genealogy has become increasingly intertwined with the internet. Now, there are classes you can take to learn how to set up your own genealogy blog. Once you have the blog, you are going to need to fill it with content. Now is a good time to collect up, and post, your family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Family recipes are special. They are comfort foods that evoke memories of the relative who originally made the dish as well as thoughts of the family events and celebrations that the food was served at. These are the recipes … Continue reading

My Son’s Birthday Party Part I

Summertime is a very busy birthday season for our family. My husband, son, and I all have summer birthdays. We also have six other extended family members (siblings and parents) that have summer birthdays. Combine the birthdays with the other summertime celebrations (like the Fourth of July) and we get a summer full of parties! We recently celebrated our son’s third birthday. We had a very nice and intimate party with just our family (mommy, daddy, birthday boy, and baby sister) on the morning of our son’s birthday. Daddy had to leave for work mid morning, so I planned a … Continue reading

Chinese New Year Birthday Party

Did you know that the seventh day of the Chinese New Year is considered “everybody’s birthday”? Today is the third day of the Lunar New Year which is a time for sons-in-laws to pay respects to their parents-in-law. In addition, families who’ve lost an immediate relative in the past three years will not be partying at other people’s homes tonight. Rather, the day is reserved for visiting cemeteries and remembering loved ones who are no longer on Earth. This tradition is practiced in China, as well as Taiwan, Vietnam, and other nations with a significant Chinese population. Here in the … Continue reading

Easter Celebrations

It is almost Easter already. This year, I realized that the date upon which Easter falls tends to “hop around” on the calendar from year to year. For the first time in my thirty-three years of existence, Easter and my birthday are actually on the same day. I enjoy reading about the Easter traditions of other families, and I have very many positive memories of Easter celebrations that my family has had over the years. This year will be a very fun time, because I am taking my son to visit my mother as well as my extended family. Many … Continue reading

The Family Celebrator

I’m a celebrator. I enjoy commemorating evenest the smallest of accomplishments and the most obscure occasions. I feel like everyone in the world should eat cake on 10/10/10 or get a bouquet of flowers for pulling off a successful all-nighter, whether it be finishing a term paper or surviving your kid’s bout with chicken pox. You don’t need a birthday or anniversary to have reason to celebrate in my book. But what happens if you are married to the CEO of the under-celebrators’ club, or worse, a non-celebrator. I exchanged wedding vows and procreated with the former, which kinda stinks … Continue reading

Do Holidays Always Include Extended Family?

My husband and I chose to spend Mother’s Day with his parents this year. They were willing to come to our house, which worked great for me, because our baby is always happier in the comfort of our home. While my daughter napped, my mother-in-law and I relaxed in front of the TV (finally, I was able to watch TLC instead of ESPN). Our husbands slaved away in the kitchen, working to prepare a delicious Mother’s Day meal. We admired the flowers we’d been given and enjoyed the feeling of putting our feet up. After lunch, the whole gang headed … Continue reading

Anniversary Celebrations in Adoptive Families

My last blog talked about rituals and celebrations for adoptive families. Of course, adoptive families celebrate the normal family occasions such as birthdays. While these absolutely should be celebrated, sometimes an adoptive child may also feel sadness on their birthday, as they realize that it is the anniversary not only of their birth, but of that their birthparents decided not to parent them. (I have written a blog that talks about helping a child deal with mixed feelings surrounding birthdays.) Many adoptive parents also celebrate “Gotcha Day” on the anniversary of the day they received the child. Some parents try … Continue reading

National Step Family Day is September 16th

It’s just over a week away, National Step Family day is celebrated in the United States on September 16th. It is a day to honor and celebrate the step family and blended families all over and the step mothers and fathers who become parents to every child in the family. It a day to celebrate, remember and commemorate and reiterate how much your blended or step family means to you. Not only is it recommended that you celebrate this day, it is important to celebrate your step family or blended family as a whole. With step families and blended families … Continue reading

Children’s Book Reviews: The Red Thread: An Adoption Fairy Tale and Every Year on Your Birthday

The Red Thread: An Adoption Fairy Tale is author-illustrator Grace Lin’s tale of a king and queen who feel a strange pain in their hearts. I consider it a strong contender for my Adoption Books with Great Art series. Lin, an American of Chinese descent, wrote the book after experiencing “many warm and wonderful interactions with families with children from China”. Based on an ancient Chinese belief that an invisible, unbreakable red thread connects those who are destined to be together, Lin creates a wise peddler who gives a king and queen with a “pain in their hearts” a pair … Continue reading

Flags, parades, picnics, and of course, fireworks–you can’t celebrate the Fourth of July without them regardless of where you are spending the long holiday weekend. Right now lodgings around the country are trying to woo families with specials and discounted packages to party on their turf. If you are still deciding where to celebrate our nation’s 232nd birthday consider the following options: MASSACHUSETTS Boston hosts one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the entire country. This year (as they do each year) the Boston Pops will be performing a rousing patriotic concert on the banks of the Charles River … Continue reading
