Raising Money Savvy Children

Logan and I went to the dollar store tonight. Originally this was just to pick out some Christmas presents for some dear friends of ours, but when Grandpa heard where we were going he couldn’t resist giving Logan a few dollars of his own to spend while we were there. Logan of course was very excited to get to pick some things out, but more importantly it provided a perfect opportunity to teach him a mini lesson on some rather important topics in today’s society. While he is only four, he was able to understand that two dollars can only … Continue reading

Save Money through Repurposing

Everyone is looking to save money these days. We tend to not be so quick to throw something out because you just never know when it might come in handy. Well let me introduce you to the idea of repurposing, which is similar to recycling. The difference is that you are extending the life of something and finding a new way to use it. This sometimes requires making some changes to the item, such as cleaning or painting it. Other times you are using it in its original form, however, in a brand new way. Think of it this way. … Continue reading

The Surprise

Recently I’ve had some surprises. Some really pleasant surprises. Some very much expected surprises. How can an expected surprise be a surprise, you ask? Easily. Before reveailing my surprises let’s just talk about how surprising school sometimes is. As many of the students reading will know, surprises can happen a lot throughout the school year. Perhaps you were surprised you got an “A” on a test. Perhaps you were surprised you got an “F.” You might have been surprised to see that photo of you coming off of the new water slide on the front page of the student paper. … Continue reading

Money Can Make You a Mommy

They say money can’t buy happiness, but evidently it can buy you motherhood. Shortly after Libby blogged about Celine Dion’s latest pregnancy announcement, I commented about the mega-singing star’s sixth try at conceiving a child. Dion and her husband, Rene Angelil have a 9-year-old son who was conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the couple wanted to add to their family, so for the past year, Dion has undergone a series of IVF attempts. According to the songstress, the sixth time was the charm. After an arduous journey and multiple failed attempts, Dion is now pregnant with twins, and … Continue reading

Where to Find Money

If you want to have a little frugal fun, why not hunt for money? People are constantly dropping money, especially coins, and if you know where to look, you just might find some. I remember the first time I ever found money on the ground. I was around eight years old and out playing in a parking lot with a friend. We found a $20 bill, which was probably the equivalent of $40 or so today. We split the money, giving us $10 each. How we handled our money was quite different. I elected to save mine, while my friend … Continue reading

“Mom, I Need Money!”

What parent hasn’t heard that phrase a billion times? Or at least some version of the “Will you give me?” or “How can I earn?” or just “Do you have any money?” While I have gotten pretty numb to it, there are times when it can grate on my last nerve. The thing is, my kids are quite old enough to earn their own money and they did all three get quite a bit of money from different sources for the holidays. However, all three of them have different levels of money-management skills and different personalities when it comes to … Continue reading

Giving Surprise Money

There was a window of time when my kids were younger that I did a pretty decent job of keeping up on the “allowance”–we did not do a set amount each week, but I paid my kids by the month for chores done. We had a “menu” of jobs that needed to be done and the salary that was paid for each job. They could then do the work, keep track of it on an invoice, and I would pay them on my pay days. This worked rather well for a couple years. As they got older, and with two … Continue reading

Seasonal Travel: Spending Thanksgiving in New Mexico

My parents met and married in Albuquerque, New Mexico and subsequently spent a number of Thanksgivings in the land of hot air balloons and roasted chilies. They now live in the land of pineapples and big surf. Hawaii is a popular holiday destination, but you’d be surprised at how many visitors descend on New Mexico during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Many hotels and resorts in the area are offering Thanksgiving packages, which include elaborate turkey spreads, but it is New Mexico, so don’t be surprised if your meal features a Southwestern accent. Common holiday dishes such as green chili and … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Wallpapers

When I start up my laptop each morning, I am greeted by classic Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet and Tiger, playing in the leaves. It is a festive way to begin a day or work or have a smile before I check my e-mail. Having a fun desktop is fun, and it also encourages me to keep all of my icons from cluttering the desktop. I write somewhere between 90 and 120 articles a month, and I tend to save them all to my desktop for a few days before filing them away in their proper places. But I could never cover up … Continue reading

Three Things to Consider When Giving Money

One important aspect of money management is giving money to others. Many different experts all agree that giving money is important. They have a wide variety of reasons why it is important. These range from religious to karma to having a sense of empowerment when it comes to your money. No matter the reason you choose to give, here are three things to consider when giving money. 1) One of the first things that you need to decide is how much you can give. If you plan this in your budget then giving will become one of your priorities. You … Continue reading
