Graduation Etiquette

Last week was my son’s high school graduation. It was a special occasion for my husband and I, along with the other parents of the nearly 300 students that graduated from my son’s class. Yes, you read that right…there were almost 300 students who had to walk across the stage. So you can imagine that it was a long evening. From the start, the principal kindly but firmly asked that all parents hold their applause until every name has been read. Not only would it delay the evening but it could prevent the next name from being heard. Cool beans…or … Continue reading

Graduation—Part Six—Thank You’s and Appreciation

We have talked about paperwork, we have talked about party planning, we have talked about all sorts of realities and details that come up when one of your children is graduating. In the end, after the ceremonies and the parties, we still have to get out all those “thank you” cards and make sure we let everyone know how much we appreciate their participation… While I do think that graduating student needs to take a big role in the sending and sharing of the “thank you’s,” I am also not naïve enough to think that it will all get done … Continue reading

Children’s Party Etiquette

Parties are a part of every child’s life, starting at a very young age. It all starts with the baby shower before babies are even born. Then, there is another party after the birth of the child. From there, you have the child’s first birthday, friends have their child’s first birthday, and the parties just keep on going. As your child becomes older, they will go to proms, graduation parties, and eventually celebrate anniversaries and retirement parties. One of the major aspects of having a successful party for smaller children is having children who behave. After all, nothing is worse … Continue reading

You’re Not Special

What words would you want spoken to your high school graduate? Would you prefer they receive accolades and praises for all they have accomplished? Or would you like to hear these words, “You aren’t special.” A commencement speech out of Massachusetts has caught the attention of the nation. High school English teacher David McCullough, Jr. had this to say: “None of you is special. You’re not special. You’re not exceptional.” He goes on to say that despite their trophies, report cards, despite the encouragement they have received from others (including the big purple dinosaur “Barney) and no matter how many … Continue reading

Consequences

One of the tenets of good parenting is teaching children about consequences. But what happens when kids see adults act inappropriately and not have to suffer a penalty for their negative actions? Well, you get a situation similar to the one described in my fellow blogger Stephanie Romero’s post about her son’s recent high school graduation ceremony. In her blog, Stephanie detailed the frustration she felt when several parents blatantly defied the principal’s plea to remain silent while the graduates’ names were being announced and diplomas were being handed out on stage. From what I gather from reading Stephanie’s post, … Continue reading

How to Celebrate Good Times on a Budget

Think you can’t afford to have fun on your birthday, anniversary, or other milestone? Think again. The month of May is chock full of special occasions for my family. From birthdays to Mother’s Day, Memorial Day to graduations, there’s no shortage of celebrations in the coming weeks. Typically, I would be concerned that all of these “big days” would put a big dent in our family’s budget, but as I mentioned in my previous blog, fortunately these special occasions are yielding some major savings. My email inbox is filled with deals from hotels, theme parks, and restaurants offering freebies and … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: May 5 – 11

From some unusual celebrations like National Grump Out Day to some common ones like graduation and Mother’s Day, and from weather events to Reasons to Move, we have a good variety of topics this week. Here is a handy round up: Pulling Out the Vinca Ground cover. It’s a love/hate thing. It can be a beautiful addition to your yard but it can also take over. Mary Ann has pacasandra, or is it pachysandra? Either one works, and either way, it can stay; but Mary Ann says the Vinca has got to go.
