Do Growing Pains Really Exist?

Every once in a while, my eldest son will complain that he can’t sleep because his legs hurt. We will inspect his legs and other parts of his body to make sure that he isn’t ill or injured, and we come up with nothing. There is no redness, swelling, bruising or other outward signs of something wrong. Joints don’t make any noise and skin is in intact. It isn’t even time for school or a hated chore. What then could be wrong? When I was little, I remember my parents calling these growing pains, a mysterious pain, usually in the … Continue reading

Dealing with Growing Pains

It’s not just a television sitcom from the 1980s! (I won’t mention my crush on Kirk Cameron, either!) Growing pains are actually a quite common phenomenon in children. I don’t remember suffering from them when I was a child — did you? Growing pains occur most often in the legs. They are often felt after strenuous play or exercise (maybe that’s why I didn’t have them — I wasn’t much of an athlete as a kid). A child may experience growing pains during two periods of development: between the ages of three and five and between the ages of eight … Continue reading

Hello there! It is a quiet Saturday evening on the day before the Superbowl. my husband is getting the last kid to bed, I’m listening to my new Nora Jones music, and I am seriously thinking of taking a nice hot bath. Before that, though, I wanted to bring you the week in review for the Frugal Living Blog. I know you read every blog faithfully, so I’ll just assume you want to reread them all again. Saturday, January 27 Save on Paper: Take Advantage of Junk Mail In an earlier blog, Save on Paper: The Three Best Ways, I … Continue reading

Child Neglect: A Growing National Problem

There are stories of children being abused and neglected almost every day in any newspaper. From my child sensitive point of view, this is a national tragedy. We live in a rural area outside of a major city. The country folks out here seem to smoke a lot. I can’t tell you how much it pains me to see a mom with a cigarette in her mouth fastening a child in a car seat. Little babies are getting their lungs filled with second-hand smoke all the time. It’s hard for me not to say something, but it would not accomplish … Continue reading

Growing Pains

When you are a parent writing about parenting issues, sometimes you don’t have to go in search of topics to write about, they come to you. Take Sunday night for instance. It was about 11 PM and I was working on an article that’s not due until the end of January but I like to finish far in advance in case something happens. Anyway, Tyler cries out in pain that his legs are hurting “bad, bad, bad.” He was on the verge of tears and I could tell by the expression on his face that he wasn’t pretending. Since I … Continue reading

Adults Can Get Fifth Disease, Too

Did you know that while most adults have been exposed to the paravirus that causes Fifth Disease (also called Fifths Disease), not all are immune. In fact, adults can get Fifth Disease, and the symptoms can be different and more severe than those that appear in children. Furthermore, Fifth Disease is often hard to diagnose in adults, not only because there are different symptoms, but also because most physicians won’t be likely to test for it. I found this out first hand, after a pretty scary couple of weeks. On the first day that I really noticed anything, I woke … Continue reading

Week Thirty One

The weeks are really starting to fly by now just as I knew they would (I am writing this at thirty three weeks!). Week thirty one had its ups and downs. Overall week thirty one of my pregnancy has been a week of adjustments. Week thirty one began with a sense of urgency to get things back to “normal.” After being out of town for a week visiting my sister, I really struggled getting back into my routine. I found myself lacking the motivation to get my projects and tasks done. Normalcy was not to be had especially with my … Continue reading

Staying Fit as You Grow Older

When you’re younger it may seem logical to live an active, fit lifestyle. But some women begin to leave that behind as they age. Some just succumb to the idea that they are getting older and will have to accept some of the changes their bodies go through. Others may believe that with getting older, you have less energy to stay active. But there are five really important reasons to keep exercising as you grow older. The first reason is that even if you can’t lose weight like you used to, you can knock off some pounds. Every pound matters … Continue reading

Week Twenty Four

Week twenty four began with much welcomed cooler weather which supplied incredible motivation and energy. The sluggishness that the heat tends to impose, particularly on pregnant women, vanished overnight and for the first time in months we were able to turn the air conditioning off and open the windows to air out the house. The days of my twenty fourth week began with cool, almost brisk, breezes making my customary hot breakfast of three eggs and sausage (in the form of an omelet by adding sautéed potato, onion, and red pepper to the mix), and hot latte particularly appealing and … Continue reading

Overcoming the Obstacles to Exercise

Human beings need to exercise regularly. Regular exercise was not a big problem a century ago because the average person’s daily life required physical activity. Times have changed. Our survival no longer depends on the same physical demands of our ancestors, yet our bodies still require regular exercise to maintain optimal health. Numerous studies and years of research has revealed that it is equally important for pregnant women to remain active throughout their pregnancies and engage is regular exercise. Knowing that exercise should be an important part of every pregnant woman’s daily life is one thing. Committing to a regular … Continue reading
