Halloween for the In-Betweens

My 8-year-old is crazy excited for Halloween. She’s got her costume picked out, her plastic pumpkin’s ready to be filled, heck, she’s even created a list of “Most Wanted Candy,” with estimations on how long her stash of free sweets will last if she devours four/five/six pieces per day. Like mother, like daughter. Meanwhile, my neighbor’s two children are at that “in-between” stage in regards to All Hallows’ Eve. They love the idea of getting mountains of candy, but are not as enthused about going door-to-door to gather it. They’d much prefer having it delivered to them a la the … Continue reading

How Not to Go Broke Celebrating Halloween

(All treat no trick) You don’t need to be a parent to know that celebrating Halloween is not cheap. These days dressing up as a naughty nun and gorging on 100 Grand bars can really set you back, and not just spiritually. The cost of costumes, candy, decorations and fillings for cavities caused by giving into your Laffy Taffy addiction is scary expensive. And, if you have multiple kids to costume and provide school treats for, the total cost of the holiday can be even more frightening. In 2011, Halloween surpassed Valentine’s Day as the second most expensive holiday celebrated … Continue reading

Pre-Halloween Safety Reminders

Can your child see clearly through his ninja mask? Is the hem on your daughter’s princess costume short enough for her to run from house to house without tripping? These are just some of the questions parents should be asking themselves in the days before Halloween. After all, the last place you want to go trick-or-treating on October 31st is the hospital emergency room. Safety should be the number one priority for parents as their kids make a mad dash for free chocolate and other sugary treats. If you are looking to protect your little ghosts and goblins from potential … Continue reading

Teen Candy Beggars: Trick or Treat?

A couple of years ago I blogged the question: How old is too old to trick-or-treat? If you are not fond of handing out treats to six-foot-tall kids dressed as killer tomatoes on Halloween, then you might consider moving to the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, or any of other town in this candy-laden country of ours where teen trick-or-treaters have been officially banned from the streets on October 31st. Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert is a straight shooter, who doesn’t mince words when it comes to explaining why his community put the kibosh on teen trick-or-treaters: “When I was … Continue reading

No Carrot Halloween for My Kid

I’m all for healthy lifestyles, exercise, eating right, eliminating childhood obesity, yada, yada, yada, but when it comes to consuming candy on Halloween, I don’t mess with tradition. Moderation. Everything in moderation. I wonder if the folks at Bolthouse Farms understand this concept and its relation to Halloween candy. I’m thinking not, considering the intense nature of its massive ad campaign and cult-like obsession with replacing traditional Halloween candy with its new SCARROTS treats. For those of you who don’t watch TV, read newspapers, flip through magazines, surf the web, listen to the radio or look up at billboards while … Continue reading

Are You a Halloween Candy Nazi?

Halloween is the one day of the year that I allow my daughter to go hog wild when it comes to candy consumption. After watching her schlep ten blocks to gather 100 pounds of treats she ought to be able to choose whatever piece of sugary goodness she desires, regardless of whether I think her choice is disgustingly gross. Cough, cough… Laffy Taffy… ahem, cough… Circus Peanuts… ahem, cough, cough… Wax Bottle candy. I examine her trick-or-treat loot for broken packaging and stray needles, but I certainly don’t waste time reading the nutrition labels on each piece of candy before … Continue reading

Halloween: Orange, Black and Green

The problem with buying reduced priced Halloween candy so early in October (you know, so you can cross it off your to-do list) is that you end up eating chocolate bars for breakfast. So much for being healthy… or green. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), my sugar-coated purchase is not doing a thing to help the planet… or my waistline. This year the EWG is encouraging parents across the nation to add some green to the black and orange Halloween mix by following some simple tips, including: Make Your Own Costume: The EWG discourages purchasing new Halloween getups … Continue reading

Kids, Swine Flu and Trick-or-Treating

My friend’s young children will be missing out on trick-or-treating this year. Thank you swine flu. Actually, one of her kids has chicken pox and the other has swine flu-like symptoms, but has not yet been tested for H1N1. Regardless, I won’t be taking my daughter to their home for treats this Halloween. In fact, I wondered if my pal intended to hand out candy to costumed beggars today given that her home is contaminated. She is. I suppose, how would parents know whether or not their child is knocking on the door of a swine flu infested house, and … Continue reading

What To Do With Your Kid’s Gross Halloween Candy?

I suppose “gross” is a relative term, but when it comes to Circus Peanuts, Laffy Taffy and Wax Bottle candy, I exercise my parental veto power, and liberally toss out my daughter’s Halloween treats without an ounce of guilt. Actually, this year we will be donating unwanted Halloween candy to a group, which will distribute the sweet treats to children who are unable to go trick-or-treating. Other individuals are embracing the share-your-Halloween-candy concept as well. For example, dentists in New Hampshire, New Jersey and Iowa are redefining the phrase “put your money where your mouth is.” The dental experts are … Continue reading

Kids, Cereal and Halloween

Just in time for Halloween the Food and Drug Administration has some spooky news for parents: Those so-called healthy cereals you’ve been feeding your kids may not be as nutritious as they claim to be. A while back cereal manufacturers, including Kellogg’s and General Mills, started displaying banners on their boxes announcing that their delicious sugared breakfast treats were “Smart Choices” and “Healthy Choices” respectively. For example, General Mills proudly declares that Cocoa Puffs are a “Smart Choice” for kids, despite the fact that the cereal, which turns leftover milk into fudgy syrup, contains 40 percent sugar. How healthy is … Continue reading
