The Truth About Your Diet During Pregnancy

One of the assumptions I made about pregnancy prior to becoming pregnant is I’d have a diet-related Get out of Jail Free card.  I knew that there are certain foods it’s best to avoid, but I thought at least I’d have a free pass to eat, well, not quite as much as I wanted, but to feel a bit more guilt-free about evening ice cream binges. That turned out not to be the case at all.  First off, the whole “eating for two” thing isn’t true.  At most, you should eat for one and a quarter.  In addition to that, … Continue reading

Knowledge Is Power When It Comes to Drugs

It used to be that it was easy to know the types of drugs that teens might try. But gone are the days of that. Now you hear about kids getting high on everyday products. Or you hear about a new substance that while it isn’t illegal, it can still produce the same effects such as may be found in marijuana. So for parents it can be difficult to keep up on the latest trends. In the past I have blogged about some of these things—including spice, digital drugs and salvia. But as much as I try to keep updated, … Continue reading

Have You Heard of Digital Drugs?

As I was searching for some teen information online I accidentally ran across something I had never heard of, digital drugs. It is a way for people to “get high” while listening to these strange sound waves. You can easily find this on YouTube. Since I am always trying to stay one step ahead of the teen culture, I decided to check out one of the videos. You listen to about nine minutes of what I feel is nothing more than an annoying sound. Its apparently more effective listening to this with headphones on but I literally could stand less … Continue reading

The Cinnamon Challenge

Ahhh…there is nothing like sprinkling some cinnamon on my homemade French toast. Are you a cinnamon fan? If so, you might want to lock it up from your teen. According to the nation’s poison centers, they received 139 calls between January and March of 2012, concerning potential cinnamon poisoning. Yes, you read that right…cinnamon poisoning. It sometimes amazes me how an adolescent can turn something so innocent (and delicious) into something so dangerous. Apparently there is a new game being played amongst teens called the “cinnamon challenge.” This game is being blamed on at least 122 of those calls made … Continue reading

The Medicare Advantage Gym Membership

It isn’t unheard of for certain types of health insurance plans to offer to cover the cost of a policyholder’s gym membership. However, it is a relatively new thing for this to be offered in Medicare Advantage plans. Some say this will help seniors stay healthy. Other say it will push extra costs to the regular Medicare program. When I think of health insurance plans that cover the cost of gym memberships, I usually think of the employer sponsored ones that are offered to employees of large businesses. I think of the companies who have an on-site gym that employees … Continue reading

Good and Bad News for Teenagers in America

Well its good and bad news for teenagers in America. The good news is that fewer teens are having babies and preterm birth rates are going down, along with death rates as a result of injury. There are also fewer teens participating in binge drinking. All of this comes from an annual report, “American’s Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2011” released from the “Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics”. I wish I could leave it at that but there is also some bad news. More teens are living in conditions of poverty and homes where at least … Continue reading

Celebrities Having A Bad Day

Friday was not a good day for Oscar-nominated director John Singleton. According to police reports, 39-year-old Singleton killed a female jaywalker who stepped in front of his Lexus SUV as he was driving it down a street in L.A.’s Jefferson Park neighborhood. The 57-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after the incident. Singleton, meanwhile, was questioned by police and later released. According to officers on the scene, the director waved down squad cars responding to the accident and identified himself. Police say Singleton (who made his film debut in 1991’s “Boyz N The Hood”) … Continue reading
