How to Help Your Kids Fall Asleep

Sleep is important. We all know what it feels like to have to get up and start the day after not having enough sleep. Before parents can turn in for the night they need to make sure their children are asleep. What can you do if your child is resisting bedtime or getting up at night? Here are some ideas that could help your kids to fall asleep. How much sleep do kids really need? The National Sleep Foundation has some recommendations that are based upon the age of the person. Adults need less sleep than children and babies do. … Continue reading

Teen Battles “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome”

Sleep is something that everyone needs a healthy amount of. Parents of young children probably treasure sleep more than anyone else does. Teens tend to sleep a lot, but not as much as a seventeen year old in Pennsylvania. She has been diagnosed with “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome”. Disney made the story of “Sleeping Beauty” well known to many of us when we were children. An angry fairy places a curse on Princess Aurora while she is still a baby. Nothing bad happens until the Princess becomes a teenager. She pricks her finger on a spindle, and this triggers the curse … Continue reading

Parents of Teens Need Friends Too

I spent a good half hour late last night texting a friend. I sound like a teenager, don’t I? We were going back and forth, sharing our “teen” stories and encouraging each other. What I especially love about this friend is that she is one who can truly relate. We both have sons who are seniors. We both have daughters that are just one year apart and our youngest sons are both in 7th grade. In fact, all of our kids are very good friends, having grown up in the church together. One of the topics of our texting was … Continue reading

Homework and Sleep: Do Students Receive Enough?

I mentioned in a previous blog receiving an email that directed me to an article, “Pressure from parents: Do students need more of it?” I addressed the question of whether or not more pressure needs to be put on students. But in this blog I am going to look at some other interesting findings from the article, regarding homework and sleep. The article cites that students average 3.07 hours of homework every night, which totals to 552.6 hours a year. That is a lot of homework, especially when you combine it with the class work they do in school. Now … Continue reading

Does More Pressure Need to Be Put on Students?

I got an email from a website, “Online Degrees,” in which you can find a really interesting article, “Pressure from parents: Do students need more of it?” It was interesting to read this after coming off parent/teacher conferences. I have one child that truly cares about their schoolwork and is doing well. I have another child who could take it or leave it. Then I have a child that really doesn’t seem to care. Three very diverse students. The article cites a study done by the “Pew Research Center,” in which 6 in 10 Americans believe that parents aren’t putting … Continue reading

Readjusting Teen’s Sleep for the Start of School

Welcome back to reality…the days of sleeping in are over and let me tell you, this is not easy for teenagers. To make matters worse, where the high school used to start at 7:40 a.m., it is now starting at 7:30 a.m. Yes, those 10 minutes really do make a difference to a teen. I remember when my children were younger it was much easier to get them adjusted back to school hours. I put them to bed earlier and woke them up earlier. Now I don’t have the luxury of putting my children to bed. Sure, I can tell … Continue reading

Should Teens Be Allowed to Sleep in Late during Summer?

Don’t you love when you give a command or tell your child they have to do something and after they ask why, you don’t have an answer? I have discovered that oftentimes I make decisions as a parent without really thinking it through. That was a recent issue here in my home as I told my teens before school let out that they weren’t going to be staying up all night and sleeping in until noon the next day. Not much was said until summer break started. The first few days I would wake my kids up by 9 a.m. … Continue reading

Video Interview with a Sleep Doctor and Mom

Recently I was invited to ask a women’s health expert, Dr. Donnica, some questions about sleep habits. She put together a terrific video that I hope you will watch. What I appreciated about this opportunity was the ability to ask questions specific to moms of teenagers. When our children are very young, there is a lot of focus on how moms lose sleep. But it doesn’t always get better when our children become teens. In addition, teens have their own sleep issues that can interfere with their daily lives so I thought this was a great way to get some … Continue reading

Don’t Fall Asleep At Your Desk – Reclaim Your Energy Now

When you work from home, you are often balancing work with other things in your life, such as taking care of children and taking care of your home. You need a lot of energy to be able to accomplish everything that you do each day. Sometimes that energy is hard to come by. Here are a few different ways that you can boost your energy level without reaching for the coffee pot (again). If you can pinpoint an underlying cause for your lack of energy you can make a big difference in how you feel. One major culprit of low … Continue reading

Provide Opportunities for Teens to Give

This past weekend my family got to experience something for the very first time. We worked together to serve breakfast and hand out Christmas presents to needy families. I am so grateful for the experience and for the changes I saw in my children. I would love to say that my children went into this experience with enthusiasm but alas, the teenage thought process of the world being all about them was ruling its ugly head. One of my teens was absolutely horrified that we would have to be somewhere at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Didn’t I know … Continue reading
