Last-Minute Father’s Day Scrapbooking

Time is running out for all of you slow scrappers. If you are looking to craft a memory book to gift to your Dad this Father’s Day, you can’t afford to procrastinate any longer. By now you should have all of your materials together, including the album, paper, embellishments, photos and mementos. To further expedite the construction process, it’s a good idea to have some general notes or sketches detailing how you want your finished layouts to look and what order you plan to display your page designs. When it comes to piecing together layouts, I typically work off of … Continue reading

Busy Time Management

I’m addicted to technology and time-management news! (Phew!) There, I’ve said it. I love the tips, tricks, tools, and discussions offered on a variety of websites. This past month I’ve been fairly free to spend a good deal of time clicking around on these pages for fun in between my spurts of writing for a playwriting course and reading for an Art class I’ll be starting next week. But it’s finally caught up with me. Today I’ll have to actually start attending class physically. Some classes don’t require this (creative writing) and so I’ve been able to churn out material … Continue reading

Father’s Day

There seems to be some confusion about when, exactly, fatherhood and motherhood begin and with Father’s Day rapidly approaching this topic needs to be addressed. This doesn’t seem to be so confusing for my wife and I because we consider ourselves parents already. My wife’s motherhood is quite obvious as the changes that her body has undergone so far outweigh any notion that she is not already caring and sacrificing for her child: Morning sickness, stretch marks, packing away that favorite pair of jeans and those form fitting tops for donated or used maternity clothes. Fatherhood seems to be a … Continue reading

The Ten Commandments Series: The Tenth Commandment

We bring our series to a close by examining the tenth commandment, which is found in the Book of Exodus 20: 17 and reads: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. Out of all ten, this commandment is the one that probably confused me the most when I was a child. “Covet” is kind of an odd word, and the meaning isn’t immediately clear. My mom explained it to me in this way – … Continue reading

How To Tell If A Man Is Father Material

Is it possible for a woman to predict whether a man will be a good father to their offsprings? Researchers at the University of Michigan think there is- by studying his face. In the December issue of Personal Relationships, results of an online study revealed that men with “low facial masculinity” made better parents. 854 male and female undergraduate students were shown male faces that had been altered to look more and less feminine. This was done by adjusting facial features, the shape of the jaw, for instance. The participants were then asked which of the men they would prefer … Continue reading

Tori’s Tell-All

Well, she certainly is lacking material. That’s what I thought when I first heard actress Tori Spelling is planning to write a memoir about her privileged childhood and well-documented adult years. This on top of her other “entertainment” project: running a bed and breakfast with husband Dean McDermott for an upcoming Oxygen network series. According to PEOPLE magazine, Simon & Schuster plans to publish the book by the former “Beverly Hills 90210” star and expectant mom. I had to chuckle when I read that Spelling told USA Today that she plans to write her book when “the baby is napping.” … Continue reading

Prince Harry Adds to a Long Line of Royal Scandals – Part 2

Earlier in the week, I blogged about Prince Harry and his recent naked in Vegas photo scandal. Reports are surfacing that the royal family is still behind the young prince and why not? There have been royal scandals in England for quite some time now. Here are a few that might put Harry’s antics to shame: King Edward VIII abdicated the thrown to marry Wallis Simpson. Not only was she American, but she had been divorced – twice – and it was later revealed she was a Nazi sympathizer. Harry’s aunt, Princess Anne, was married to Mark Phillips. That in … Continue reading

Teen Summer Reading: Birthday Suit

I don’t know if you have the same problem as I do, but finding good reading material for teens over the summer can be a challenge. In fact, just getting teens to read at all can be difficult. I was recently sent a copy of the “Birthday Suit” written by Tyler Durman. I decided to preview the book before handing it off to one of my teens. Well it didn’t take long before I was laughing out loud. He takes the long lost art of storytelling and brings it alive again. It is comprised of nine short stories that take … Continue reading

My Next Chapter

After my biological parents divorced, my mother’s high school boyfriend came for a visit, proposed, and she married him. I have memories of getting a birthday card from a new grandmother wishing me happy fourth birthday with an elephant beating a drum as I boarded the Amtrak train to Los Angeles, California. My new father and my mother decided to have him adopt me in order to obtain complete custody of me and my sister. Thus I now have birth certificates from two U.S. states. My second father seemed to try harder, and was more consistent. He paid the bills, … Continue reading

Charlie Sheen’s New Boys and Guy Ritchie’s New Girl

What a difference a year can make. While some maintain he doesn’t deserve happiness, Charlie Sheen is having one heck of a 2008. Not only did he cut ties with former wife Denise Richards (though, when you are divorced from the other parent of your children, are you ever completely rid of them?), the same woman he dubbed “a pathetic example of a human being,” but Sheen also married his girlfriend Brooke Mueller and three months after the wedding announced that she was pregnant. Now, on top of all that, Sheen just confirmed that Mueller is expecting twins. Twin boys … Continue reading
