Once a week, the Insurance Blog Week in Review brings you a fast way to “ketchup” on all the blogs that were posted here in the past seven days. There can be anywhere between twelve and fourteen blogs that appear. What did you miss? A Brief Comparison of Health Care Plans Obama’s plan includes coverage for adults and children who have a pre-existing condition. Romney’s plan includes coverage for people who have a pre-existing condition – but only if they have had continuous health insurance coverage. The Insurance Podcast Roundup went up on June 25, 2012. This week, I’d like … Continue reading

Texting While Driving Now Banned in Wisconsin

Just yesterday, December 1, 2010, Wisconsin became the 30th state to enforce a new law that prohibits texting while driving. I was very happy to report that to my son who has his learner’s permit. Of course it opened up a whole discussion about what constitutes texting while driving. For instance, is it considered texting while driving if you just look at a message? I was glad to answer those questions. While there can definitely be a fine line between what falls under texting while driving, I simply referred to what the Milwaukee County Sheriff said in a newscast I … Continue reading

Teenage Driving–an Introduction

It dawned on me that in all the writing and mulling and contemplating I do here on Families.com about parenting teenagers, I haven’t really even begun to touch on the subject of teens and transportation. Particularly teens, cars and driving! I’m not sure if it was an accidental oversight on my part or a subconscious desire to forget that driving and teenagers are such a big deal. Well, the fact is, teens and driving are a big deal! My eldest daughter will be seventeen in a few weeks and she doesn’t have her driver’s license yet. She does have her … Continue reading

How’s My Teen’s Driving?

I’m sure you’ve seen the signs on the back of trucks that ask, “How’s My Driving?”, followed by a number you can call to report unsafe driving practices. If you have a teen driver, you can purchase bumper stickers that ask, “How’s My Kid’s Driving?”. HowsMyKidDriving.org , a New Jersey-based company, is just one of many companies that offer these bumber stickers. Like many of the other companies that offer this type of service, parents place the bumper stickers on their child’s car. Other drivers can make an anonymous call to a toll-free number and give the driver’s ID code. … Continue reading

The Animal Kingdom’s Rides

Today I’m returning to my profile of Disney’s Animal Kingdom to look at its rides. At first I thought the Animal Kingdom wouldn’t have any, being more like a zoo, but no, it’s still a Disney amusement park so there are rides. Expedition Everest is one of the park’s two roller coasters. It takes riders – big kids, teens, and adults – to the top of a mountain and into the home of a Yeti. The coaster careens in and out of the mountain, plunging riders into darkness, then light, then back again. At one point it even seems that … Continue reading

Stupid Teen Stunt: Car surfing

What happens when a person is ejected from a moving car? Anyone? They get injured and maybe even die? So why would a teen stand on a car or sit on the back hood of a moving car? My guess is they have a death wish. Car surfing, the act of riding a car by standing or sitting on the top of the car instead of inside has got to be one of the most dangerous stupid stunts that a teen can do. Car surfing became popular among reckless teens in the late 1980’s when the movie Teen Wolfe portrayed … Continue reading

Saving Money at the Shore 3

We just got back from our vacation this weekend, and we are now catching up with the regular routine. An unplanned side trip extended the vacation by a day, and so there is a lot to share with you. If you missed the first two posts in this series, you can catch up here: Saving Money at the Shore Saving Money at the Shore 2 I promised to talk about some free and low cost forms of entertainment when at the shore. While I will give you some examples of the things we did that were fun and frugal, you … Continue reading

Should You, Would You, Buy Your Teen a Car?

As the mom of teenagers, I spend a fair amount of time talking with other parents of teenagers. The controversy over whether or not to buy a teen a car, provide the family car, expect them to earn and purchase their own car or other variations on what the parents’ role is in teen transportation is an incredibly hot topic. For those of you who have younger children, maybe this will give a chance to “plan in advance” and practice up–thinking about where you stand on the “teens and cars” issue… For some parents, money isn’t much of an issue … Continue reading

Family Sues Parents In Alcohol-related Death

Last August, 19-year-old Jaclyn Bien died in an alcohol-related motorcycle accident. Bien’s family is suing the bike’s driver and the parents who, they say, hosted an underage drinking party. The suit alleges that the parents who hosted the party knew that the attendees were all underage and should not have been drinking. Unfortunately, this has been happening more and more. I’m not sure what the rationale is for parents who allow their kids or others to drink in their home and then get on the road. I know a parent who allowed her underage son and his friends to drink … Continue reading

How to Ask a Child if They’ve Been Sexually Abused.

The hard and awful questions of are life are usually left in the too hard basket. Parents may have an inkling that something is wrong because their child’s behavior has changed. While some parents never even consider that it could be sexual abuse, other parents (like me) worry themselves sick over the possibility of sexual abuse but most will never raise it as a possibility with their child. Sexual abuse is a hard topic to begin talking about if it has not been part of at home protective behavior discussions. Mebe’s story and early craving for someone to ask him … Continue reading
