A Family Outing Part III

After the sea lion exhibit, our son began to run with his daddy in tow towards the goats and another strange goat like animal (el packa?). The goats were kept in a fenced area but there were squares cut into the fence so that the goats and El Packa could poke their heads out to be petted (and fed) by the zoo goers. Our son immediately run up to the goats and said hello and pet one of the goats nose. I tried to get a photo of our son with a baby goat standing right up to the fence … Continue reading

Fungus Among Us

Yesterday I purchased something that I’ve been wanting for ages. No, not a new stove (got that a couple of weeks ago!). No, not a new dress (pshaw, who needs clothes?). No, I bought myself a mushroom log. Yes, a mushroom log. It is less of a log and more of a batch of compressed hardwood chips pressed into a bag and inoculated with fungus. Yum, yum. The bag looks like I left something in the fridge for too long, then let it sit on the counter for a while. It’s brown and white, with little black bits. Currently, the … Continue reading

How Not To Do Laundry

My daughter just got a new job. I told her it’s her first “big girl” job, she has to dress nicely and now works in a cubicle with the rest of the world. It also means that now she is doing laundry that is a little different than her fast food restaurant uniform. When she got the job I took her out and bought her some business clothes, this child lives in jeans and t-shirts. She has a few skirts and sweaters but not enough, she needed some more grown up clothes. Fast forward just one week and she has … Continue reading

2000 Census and the Surname Washington

The 2000 census is not the most recent census for the United States anymore, now that the 2010 census has been taken. However, it is the most current census that data has been compiled from. One of the most interesting things that can be learned from a census is the percentage of people who have the same surname. The 2000 census found that 90% of the people who had the surname Washington were black. This brings up questions about how the surname Washington relates to George Washington, if at all. The census tallies up a lot of information about each … Continue reading

Black Friday Fun at Home

No one, and I mean no one, despises the thought of a parent dragging his or her child to the mall on Black Friday more than me. For years I was paid to cover the Black Friday shopping madness while working as a local TV news reporter, and I will never forget the looks on the faces of the kids, who were ripped out of their warm beds and forced to stand in the freezing cold, so their parents could be first in line to score a 40-inch TV for 400 bucks. There are better ways to spend Black Friday. … Continue reading

A Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

Earlier this evening, my husband caught me looking at artificial Christmas trees online. I know this stresses him out. He doesn’t even want to think about having to buy a Christmas tree just a few days after Halloween. “I’m just doing research,” I say. Because of past experience, I know that now is precisely the time to look. I’m getting tired of the clean up from our Christmas tree. The shedding is a getting a bit ridiculous. It might surprise you to know that the tree in question is an artificial one, and yea it sheds. Pushing 20 years old, … Continue reading

As the weather gets cooler, it’s time to start thinking about picking up some cozy new boots. The Family Reunion Shoot

Summer is primetime for family reunions. The gatherings are designed to reconnect with distant relatives and often yield awesome photographs of two, three, or four generations of family members. My mom’s side of the family has massive family reunions every other year. The food is catered, the decorations are done by a party planner and there’s always some sort of live entertainment, so everyone can concentrate on having fun instead of worrying about cooking, cleaning and chasing after kids. In addition, there’s always a professional photographer on hand to document the reunion. Even if your family reunion doesn’t feature a … Continue reading

Top Ten Most Common Canadian Surnames

In 2007 CBS News in Canada published a list of the top ten most common Canadian surnames. They compiled this list by searching through telephone directories that were compiled by a company called infoUSA. This is an unscientific study, and it does not take into account anyone who did not happen to have a telephone number attached to their surname in that year. But, it does give a general idea of what the top ten most common Canadian surnames might be. According to this study, the most common Canadian surname is Li. This name has Chinese origin. It might mean … Continue reading
