NFL Teammate Supports Newly Outed Former Player

It seems that one of the hardest things a gay person has to do is come out.  Many wait for just the right moment and often fear that it might alienate family and friends. But, what is you were outed in pubic?   That has to be the worse. That is exactly what happened to Kwame Harris this week.  Harris appeared in court Monday after his former boyfriend, Dimitri Geier, filed a civil suit against him.  Geier is charging the former NFL offensive tackle, who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, with domestic violence causing great bodily injury … Continue reading

Are You Ready for Some Football Fun?

High school football is a big deal in the small county in which I reside. Okay, maybe not as huge as in Texas. Last time I checked we didn’t have NBC knocking at our door to shoot Friday Night Lights II, but the sport is popular nonetheless. The new football season kicks off this Friday with major match ups at various area high schools, and of course, where there’s a game going on, there’s a tailgate party to go with it. If you are looking for simple ideas for your next home or away game, then consider these winners: Decor: … Continue reading

Mom Just Can’t Do It All

Well it has certainly been a rough start for our family this school year. While I had been so looking forward to a routine and being able to work in peace and quiet, it has not gone as smoothly as I thought it would. My work time has been drastically cut down, by almost two hours just because I have to get my children to and from school, along with another group of kids in the afternoon. I can’t even necessarily finish up my work when we finally get home because there are homework issues, dinner to cook and football … Continue reading

Learning from Our “Ouch” Moments

Ever have one of those “ouch” moments as a parent? You know what I’m talking about, one of those moments as a parent where you have made a mistake and you think to yourself, “Ouch that really hurts.” It hurts because most parents like to believe they know what they are doing. We are supposed to have it all together, aren’t we? Yet the reality is that we don’t always know what we are doing and sometimes we really don’t have it all together. This week I experienced an “ouch” moment. With my middle school son joining football this year, … Continue reading

No Moment in Life Is Too Small

Yesterday my preteen started his first football camp. This was a little different as all of the grades are combined, 6th through 12th grade. When we arrived they were all huddled together, however, there were more high school boys present than middle school boys. My son looked absolutely terrified. This is going to be a big year for him. He will be entering middle school. It will be an entirely new environment from the small, cozy elementary school he attended since kindergarten. He is also starting tackle football, a serious game at any level. However I really love this age … Continue reading

I Am Now a Football Mom

Today I officially become a football mom, the opposite I guess of a soccer mom. My son who is entering middle school in September will be joining his school’s football team. This is real football, none of that grabbing a flag stuff. He will actually be playing tackle football. I have quickly discovered that being a football mom requires planning your life around the football schedule. This week begins Speed Camp, next week is Conditioning Camp and then the real practice schedule begins. Monday through Friday he will be practicing. Back in April I attended the first football meeting for … Continue reading

Is Your Daughter Into Video Games?

If you answered “yes,” then you probably already know how challenging it is to find quality games that don’t promote stereotypical interests such as fashion and make up. On the other hand, if your daughter is interested in violent games featuring guns, warriors and knife-wielding car thieves, or ones that focus on male dominated sports such as football, boxing and baseball, then you’re probably broke by now. So, either way you’ve got issues. Despite the limited amount of video games tailored specifically to girls, child psychologists recommend parents not discourage their daughter’s interest in gaming. Rather, they recommend getting involved … Continue reading

Penny Football

Summer travels often bring some unexpected down time. Penny football is a good game to fill up some moments. Since this is a casual lunchroom developed game, there are several versions of rules. All you need to play are three pennies, two players, and a table. A smallish table works best. You can still play on a large table, but you may want to state boundaries so that the coins don’t get to far off track. Flip one of the coins to see who goes first. The winner of the coin toss places the three coins in a triangular formation … Continue reading

Winning in the Game of Life

The internet astounds me. I love the way it connects us with people from all over the world and all walks of life, who might not otherwise have met. Recently Dr Jeffrey Brown, a clinical and sport psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, contacted me. He’d been reading some of my blogs here at families.com on Christian parenting. As a result, he thought I might be interested in reading his book, ‘The Competitive Edge – how to win every time you compete,’ and had his publisher send me a copy. If you think the idea of winning every … Continue reading

Working Around the Disadvantages of Wireless Digital Photo Frames

In my previous blog I provided a laundry list of advantages that come with owning a wireless digital photo frame. If you live in a high tech home your wireless digital photo frame likely acts as an extra monitor in addition to your TV, your computer and your cellphone. For about $100 to $200 you not only get a place to view your favorite digital photos, but also if you want to see the weather forecast, the scores from last night’s football game or view how your stocks are doing—presto! You simply press a button on your frame and the … Continue reading
