Dogs and Cats Who Blog

Do your pets keep a blog? Do they tweet? Do they have a Myspace page? Do they chat with other ani-pals on Facebook (or Dogbook or Catbook)? Writing for your pets can actually be a great creative exercise and imagination outlet. Think about it: you’re writing in a voice that is not your own, imagining what a pet’s daily life is like, and even interacting with other imagined animal personalities. If you’ve got a reluctant writer in the house, writing as a pet might be a good way to go. Twitter is fun for the one-liners — you have to … Continue reading

My Experiences with, “You’re not my real mother!”

My last review was of the book You’re Not My REAL Mother! I think most adoptive parents hear this at some point. Unfortunately, it is often hurled at a parent by a teen or “tween”-aged child casting about for anything that will get our goat. I think we’re lucky if we get hit with this while our kids are young. That shows that our kids are able to express to us any doubts they may have. And they may be more willing to listen to our replies. I dreaded the phrase and imagined that hearing it must be excruciatingly painful. … Continue reading

What is “Real” to You and What is “Real” to Your Child May Differ

“There’s a monster under my bed!” Or “I saw a fairy today!” Fantasies and imaginations run wild with small children. Even the young toddler may start to tell grand “tales” and have nightmares and fantasies. Our first inclination as parents may be to reprimand our child and try to get him to understand that his fantasies and imaginings are not “real”—but what is real and obvious to us may not be the same “real” that our child is experiencing. Common advice for a parent who is dealing with a three-year-old who has developed a fear of “imaginary” ghosts is to … Continue reading

Can Casanovas Ever Really Commit?

Yesterday on the Today show they had a guy on named Paul Janka, a self-proclaimed “serial seducer.” Meredith Vieira interviewed him, and I was cracking up because she tried to maintain journalistic integrity. She tried not to form an opinion of him and to present the matter impartially, but I got the distinct impression she didn’t think too much of him. I didn’t either. He claims he’s had over 100 bedroom conquests and doesn’t feel bad about loving and leaving them. He says he was honest with his intentions up front and they knew what to expect. His Philosophy He … Continue reading

Deal With the “Real” Child (Not Your Projections)

Let’s face it, most of us had ideas and ideals about what our children would be like or even what sort of parent we would be. In reality, that little child may be quite different from what we imagined or our child’s behavior may be very different from what we thought we were going to be dealing with. It is important to be able to separate fact from fiction and be able to parent and interact with the “real” child, not project our ideas of who and what we hoped onto that separate person. A little well-placed delusion can sometimes … Continue reading

Real Interruption or Imagined?

Keeping on track is tough whether you work at home or not–but when you are working in your home business, there usually isn’t a boss or well-meaning coworker to bring you back to reality and keep you motivated to withstand those interruptions. But, I have also found that when I am working at home–some interruptions are valid and legitimate, and some I conjure up myself to keep from having to buckle down… I can think up all sorts of reasons NOT to work–and what I don’t think up, I have plenty of other people around who can participate. I can … Continue reading

Real Boys – William Pollack, Ph.D.

“Real Boys” was first introduced on the Oprah Winfrey Show some years ago. I bought it because I’d just had my first son, but to be honest (and sheepish) I actually didn’t read it until two days ago, and that son is nearly nine. I’ve also had two sons since then. Sometimes I’m a book slacker. I was mainly interested in this book because I grew up in a household of all girls, and knew practically nothing about boys. I hoped this book would be the key to unlocking the mysterious gender and would guide me to be a better … Continue reading

Is it Real or Imagined?

Most of us parents have to deal with our children’s wild and wonderful imaginations at one time or another—whether it is imaginary friends, or monsters, or vivid nightmares. We parents can let our imaginations get the best of us too! When anxiety, fears, and stress seem to be your best parenting friend, it might be worthwhile to ask yourself if your concerns are real…or imagined? I’m here to tell you that I can imagine all sorts of fabulous and horrid things happening to my children. If one of them is 15 minutes late getting home, there have been times when … Continue reading
