Learning When to Zip It

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve spilled a lot about my kid on this blog. A. Lot. Perhaps too much. Whereas it may not seem like it, I really do filter the information I share with the world about my child. For every one thing I reveal here, there are hundreds of personal tidbits I would never dream of publicizing, and as my daughter gets older, I plan to zip it even more. Even if she becomes an Olympic gold medalist. Ahem. Especially, if she becomes an Olympic gold medalist. You have to wonder if swimming superstar Ryan … Continue reading

Summer Reading Series: Penny and Her Song

You won’t be seeing my daughter on American Idol any time soon. Make that, ever. My 7-year-old possesses a litany of incredible talents; however, singing is not one of them. I know. I know. How dare I make such a stinging comment about my own flesh and blood. Calm down. It’s called reality. And it doesn’t mean that I don’t allow her to exercise her vocal chords. Nor does it mean that I cringe whenever she feels the urge to make like Miley Cyrus or the kids on Curious George. Rather, I am simply not a parent who is disillusioned … Continue reading

The Lost Art of Handwriting

My daughter is brilliant, charming, athletic, scrumptiously cute… but not perfect. Despite all of her wonderful qualities (which surely she inherited from her mother… ahem!), she has some issues. It’s not her choice in music that I am referring to; rather, it’s her penmanship. My second grader’s handwriting leaves a lot to be desired. I’d flat out say it stinks, but she’s seven, so time is on her side. What’s more, I don’t want to deal with her wrath if there ever comes a day that she actually reads this post. Anyway, back to her pathetic penmanship. I could blame … Continue reading

The Buck Stops Here

(That was then) I’ve shared a lot about my daughter on this blog: Ladies and gentlemen: Exhibit A Exhibit B Exhibit C Exhibit D Exhibit E Heck, I could go through the entire alphabet twice with the number of anecdotes I’ve posted detailing the trials and tribulations of raising a child in the 21st century. My precious peanut was barely two years old when I started writing here. She’s seven now… going on 17. (This is now) I’ve rarely censored myself while serving up slices of our suburban life. I didn’t really need to. After all, I never saw the … Continue reading

Mommy Addictions

Two words: Downton Abbey. After a hard day scrubbing filthy floors, washing stacks of soiled dishes, sorting mountains of dirty laundry, chasing unruly kids, cooking, chauffeuring, and calming crying babies, moms deserve a break; a chance to relax, unwind and indulge in something that brings them peace, repose and otherwise rejuvenates their spirit. According to an unscientific survey, these days, those highly anticipated (though extremely rare) Mommy breaks are being spent in front of a television screen fostering an addiction to Downton Abbey. The entire universe is reportedly enraptured by the ITV/PBS drama set in early 20th Century England, but … Continue reading

Silly Sounds of the Season

Have you seen the Wal-Mart Christmas commercial where the guy insists on playing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” while an elderly woman wearing a leg cast looks on in disgust? I walk out of the room whenever it’s on. Conversely, my 7-year-old loves the TV ad almost as much as her beloved “Peggy” commercial. Tis the season for crazy Christmas carols. Only this year my kid finally gets the joke and is obsessed with committing the holiday parodies to memory. Grandma, help me! Along with the granny versus caribou carol, my daughter delights in Bob Rivers’ twisted holiday … Continue reading

Favorite Phases

When daughter was a toddler she absolutely adored watching Blues Clues. However, most of her viewing came courtesy of DVDs which I would have to set-up for her. By the time she was three, my daughter knew that it required a few button presses by mom before Blue and crew would show up on our television screen. While I adjusted settings, my daughter would grab her stuffed Elmo chair and settle in the middle of the living room smack in front of the TV. She would wait anxiously as I powered up the TV and DVD, made some menu selections … Continue reading

All I Want for Christmas is a Toy That Burps

My anti-girly girl daughter doesn’t take after her mother when it comes to Christmas wishes. Whereas I begged Santa for a baby doll that I could swaddle, cuddle and dress in lacy ensembles when I was a little girl, my tomboy has her sights set firmly on a battery-powered behemoth with movable brows, hairy feet and a panache for burping. Apparently, Big Foot has made a break from the woods of the Pacific Northwest because he’s sitting in toy stores from coast-to-coast. Fisher-Price’s Imaginext Bigfoot the Monster may be on my daughter’s big Christmas present wish list, only like Kota … Continue reading

Have a Merry Minted Christmas

I don’t drink, but walking into Target or Wal-Mart right now makes me want to run home and pour myself a boot of something stronger than beer. Tis the season for breakouts and breakdowns. Seriously. Have you been to the mall recently? Retailers have dumped their Halloween costumes and candy; bypassed Thanksgiving paraphernalia; and are shoving Santa down customers’ collective throats. Fa-la-la-la. We’re not even 85 hours into November and I already feel my inner Christmas Grinch bubbling up from the bowels of my being. How can I feel so behind on Christmas preparations when I still have buckets of … Continue reading

Loving the Hair Song

If you have a Sesame Street fan in your home, or even if you don’t, you’ve probably heard the hoopla surrounding the latest Muppet hit: “I Love My Hair.” The superdooperschmooper cute music video went viral after it debuted on Sesame Street earlier this month. Now all I hear All.Day.Long. is my 6-year-old begging to watch and re-watch, and re-watch the skit that features an adorable brown puppet singing her heart out about the versatility of her tresses. The video was inspired by Sesame Street’s head writer and puppeteer Joey Mazzarino, who is a dad to a 5-year-old daughter with … Continue reading
