Salvage the Halloween Sugar

What’s a more frightening prospect for most for moms and dads; navigating through a maze of downed trees, wires and other debris with their children, or being left home alone with multiple bags of Halloween candy? In many communities along the East Coast slammed by superstorm Sandy, trick-or-treating has been postponed or cancelled for safety reasons, leaving hundreds of thousands of parents in a precarious spot: Having to explain to their mini ghouls and goblins how a fierce weather phenomenon dampened an annual tradition, and then finding ways not to waste the mountains of sweet treats that were bought for … Continue reading

The Tale of Excess Easter Candy

Are your kids still on a sugar high from eating too much Easter candy? On Sunday, I gave my second grader fair warning: whatever candy she had not consumed by Tuesday would be given away or made into public property. Yes, mean mommy strikes again. Listen, I am just keeping it real. Whereas I truly appreciate the generosity of family and friends, who showered my daughter with sugary seasonal treats, what I don’t need is a house full of chocolate, jelly beans and bubble gum the likes of which we haven’t seen since Halloween. Forget about Easter being a spring … Continue reading

Halloween for Baby

Our son is not yet 3 months old. He doesn’t eat candy. We’re not especially fond of taking him into public places to meet strangers with H1N1 going around. We’re also not at “home.” All of this has made the decision to not trick-or-treat much easier. However, there is a part of me that is regretting not dressing our son up like something for his first ever theatrical opportunity. My love of “pretend” is somewhat being squashed by circumstances beyond my control. A lengthy trip tomorrow (at least a whole day of driving) followed by scrambled organization for returning to … Continue reading

Halloween or Harvest Cookie Pops

We spotted a version of cookies on a stick recently at our school festival, and ever since then, my kids have been asking to make them. Since Halloween is coming up this week, I better get going. This sounds like a good bit of cooking to do on Friday after school. I bet all of the neighborhood kids will want to join in as well. An easy way to make cookie pops is to use a basic sugar cookie dough. Sugar cookie dough is easy to cut into fun shapes and easy to decorate. Plus, the dough will accept a … Continue reading

Halloween Candy and the Frugal Shopper

As I walked through the grocery store yesterday, I glanced by the candy in the impulse shopping section right before you get to the cash resisters. It was filled with candy. In the 30 seconds that I glanced I noticed that this year’s Halloween Chocolates were in smaller bags than previous years and that these small bags of chocolate cost $10.00… 10 dollars… TEN DOLLARS!!! There is no way I am ever going to pay $10.00 for a bag of chocolate. I am not even going to pay $5.00 when they put them on buy one get one free sale … Continue reading

Kids, Cereal and Halloween

Just in time for Halloween the Food and Drug Administration has some spooky news for parents: Those so-called healthy cereals you’ve been feeding your kids may not be as nutritious as they claim to be. A while back cereal manufacturers, including Kellogg’s and General Mills, started displaying banners on their boxes announcing that their delicious sugared breakfast treats were “Smart Choices” and “Healthy Choices” respectively. For example, General Mills proudly declares that Cocoa Puffs are a “Smart Choice” for kids, despite the fact that the cereal, which turns leftover milk into fudgy syrup, contains 40 percent sugar. How healthy is … Continue reading

Make Crunchy Chocolate Turkeys with Your Kids this Thanksgiving

If you are going to take the time to make one edible craft this Thanksgiving, this should be it. My daughter made these adorable Chocolate Turkeys in cooking class last week and gobbled it up before I could go parental paparazzi on her and snap a few keepers. That’s just one of the reasons we are headed back into the kitchen this week to whip up a few more. The body of these cute little turkeys is made from Chocolate Rice Krispies cereal and the rest of the ingredients can be found in your pantry. This is one of the … Continue reading

Desserts with Cherries and Chocolate

Friday is our playgroup’s big Halloween party. Whereas I already shared the recipe I plan to take, I thought it might be helpful to post a couple more kid (and adult)-friendly recipes that can be made in advance and travel well, in case you are still searching for a dish to pass at your Halloween party. The first recipe for Heavenly Freezer Brownies is ideal for chocoholics. Don’t let the name fool you; the brownies require an oven to bake before hitting the freezer. It’s a unique cooking concept that (in my opinion) enhances the texture of the brownies without … Continue reading

Fun and Tasty Easter Projects for Kids: Candy Nests

I have a 3-year-old who loves to cook (sometimes more than she likes to eat) and I could not recommend an easier recipe than this one to make for Easter. It only requires two ingredients (the most child-friendly on the planet: chocolate and cereal) and doesn’t require any baking. And the best part: there’s no icky, sticky, gooey mess to clean up. Honestly, this project yields less mess than coloring Easter eggs. What’s more, the end product is so delicious your kids might have a hard time saving them to show off on Easter Sunday. As I mentioned earlier each … Continue reading
