More Young Adults are Living With Their Parents

Years ago, when the “Baby Boomer” generation was young, it was expected that they would graduate, get married, and start having children in their early 20’s. Today, for the first time in more than 130 years, Americans who are between the ages of 18-34 are more likely to live with their parents than any other living situation. A Pew Research Center analysis gathered data about Americans who are between the ages of 18-34. They found that 32.1% are still living in their parents’ homes. Another 31.6% have moved out of their parents’ homes and are currently living in their own … Continue reading

Fewer Babies? Blame It on the Economy

Would you let the economy dictate how many children you have, or if you have children at all? For many couples, the poor state of the economy has forced them into remaining childless, even through they have always dreamed of having children, they say. If you’ve noticed fewer babies and young children at the park lately, you aren’t imagining things. According to the Centers of Disease Control, the U.S. fertility rate has dropped sharply since the country went into recession (2007), and it shows no signs of bouncing back any time soon. Experts predict that when the economy does eventually … Continue reading

A Caution to Single Parents

Today in class we read a book called The Spider and the Fly based on a poem by Mary Howitt and beautifully illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi. The poetry portrays a cunning spider who is deviously trying to persuade a dear fly into his home. At first the fly refuses saying she knows what happens to those who give in to the spider’s persuasions. The next day when the fly comes by the spider lures her in with his flattery words and she never returns. As I sat in class thinking about this tragic tale I likened it to us as … Continue reading

Flexible Schedules Work For Parents

In the world of traditional work, your shift begins at the time when you are scheduled to be at work. Unless you call in sick or find a co – worker to cover some or all of your shift, there is little room for flexibility. If something happens and your daily routine gets changed around a bit, you may have to work when you are rather tired if the change affected your sleep. Working from home can be much kinder and gentler in that regard because many times, you are able to decide when you work. This makes working from … Continue reading

Advice for Parents of Children With Special Needs

I’ve always heard it said that parenting can be a uniquely rewarding experience. It can also, at times, be very stressful. Sometimes, the best advice can come from other parents, who are going through similar situations. An article by Laura Shumaker offers advice, understanding, and hope for parents who are raising children that have special needs. I came across an interesting article that was written by Laura Shumaker. She is a writer and an autism advocate. She also is a mom, of a son named Matthew, who had been described as “pervasively developmentally delayed”. The article was titled “How to … Continue reading

March 23, 2012, is the official two-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Lame Parents

What a freeing moment it was for me as a mom this past week when I watched a guest segment on “The View.” Gorgeous country singer Faith Hill and her handsome husband Tim McGraw sat down to talk with the ladies of “The View.” They have three teenage daughters and apparently it doesn’t matter how good looking your parents are, how much money they make or how famous they are…teens still think their parents are lame. They showed this picture on the screen of Faith Hill in a stunning outfit, looking as fit as they get. But apparently her daughters … Continue reading

Hope for Parents of Bed-Wetters

My daughter is going to kill me for sharing this… However, in the spirit of helping others… My name is Michele and I used to parent a child who wet her bed well after she was potty trained. I silently cursed having to change soaked bed sheets in the middle of the night, and then again in the morning. I was peeved that my school-aged child couldn’t control her bladder. I worried that she would be forced to have surgery. I wondered what I was doing wrong. Then, after months of nagging suspicions and misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis, we finally met … Continue reading

Another Thing for Parents to Worry About

I worked in TV news for nearly 15 years and would roll my eyes whenever my photographer and I squeezed our way through a crowd to cover a major event and heard people shout: “I don’t watch the news!” C’mon, who doesn’t watch the news? Then, I gave birth and I figured out there really are people who avoid turning on the evening news. Parents. I now see why some parents don’t watch the news. They’re trying to preserve their sanity. With so much to worry about on a daily basis in their own little worlds, why fan the flames … Continue reading
