Moms Helping Moms

I am so impressed with the generosity of complete strangers in one woman’s life today. As single mothers we can definitely empathize with others who are struggling to support their children. Whether you are in the midst of your own battle or have since recovered and gotten back on your feet, you can feel for the other women out there that are struggling to provide the necessities for their children. You know how hard it is to admit that you need help, and actually asking for it is even harder, but when the circumstances are dire enough, you are left … Continue reading

Mommy, It’s Cold Outside!

It’s that time of year again, if it hasn’t started snowing, it will soon. Regardless, at least here in Utah it is bitter cold outside, causing our little ones to bring playtime back inside. It’s time to remind them that there is more to do indoors than to just plop in front of the TV all day. Sit down with your kids and get the creative juices flowing. If you’re having trouble, here are some fun indoor activities to keep your kids occupied while they are cooped up inside this winter. Bowling Night! Empty water bottles make great bowling pins. … Continue reading

Celebrating a Second Anniversary as a Pets Blogger

Two years ago today I officially started on with Families.com as one of their newest Pets Bloggers. Ironically enough, two years later on my anniversary date, here I’ve turned in my two weeks notice. (I just realized as I started writing this that I did that on my start date anniversary.) It’s been a good ride, a very fun ride, and an amazingly informative one. I’ll still be around for the next couple of weeks, but I wanted to take a moment and reflect on some of my favorite blogs from the past couple of years. A Few of My … Continue reading

Comic Strip Mom Prepares to Say Good-Bye

When I was a girl I adored reading The Family Circus comic strip. Each Sunday I would run outside to get the newspaper and eagerly flip to the comic section to see what Billy, Dolly, Jeffy and PJ were up to (my favorite was when creator Bil Keane would use thick dotted lines showing the characters’ paths through the neighborhood or house). The Family Circus family was much like my own. I could relate to Dolly being the only girl in a family with three pesky brothers. And like the cartoon clan my brothers and I would pile into our … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for February 11-17

Are you wondering what Aimee and I wrote about last week because other matters kept you away from the Pets Blog? If so, you came to the right place. Here’s what we covered on: Monday, February 11 The problem with show dog science is that it’s created a lot of genetic defects which leads to both physical and mental disorders for purebred pets. What’s a girl and her two dogs to do when they finally get a nice day to go outside? Head to dog park of course. But Aimee and her crew came home with souvenirs: mud socks! Tuesday, … Continue reading

Mr. Mom (1983)

In “Mr. Mom,” Jack and Caroline Butler are living the typical suburban life of the 1980’s. She’s a stay-at-home mom, he works as an engineer at a car factory, and they are struggling to make ends meet. But they budget and they’re hanging in there, until Jack (Micheal Keaton) loses his job. Wondering what they’ll do to support the family, Jack and Caroline (Teri Garr) both start putting in their applications. When Caroline is hired before Jack, they both agree that Jack will stay home with the kids, but it’s just for a little while until something comes along for … Continue reading

Being Mom in a New Moon Phase

Moms go through phases just like the moon. Today I’m in a “new moon” phase, where everything is dark and I’m waiting for enlightenment, change, and the ability to somehow start over again. I’ve reached a point with my ten-year-old stepdaughter where I know I need help. I feel myself unraveling and I recognize that I’ve lost my equilibrium. Maybe I just need a break. Maybe I need a mini-vacation where I turn this child temporarily over to the total care and control of her father—just until I can get my bearings again. This morning there was another argument. She … Continue reading

Disney Animated Movies – Lightening the Anxiety Load

I’m a huge advocate for Disney animated movies. Apart from the fact that I still love to watch them myself, I’ve allowed my boys to watch them from being babies. In fact for the first year, the only other screen “entertainment” they watched were the Baby Einstein videos (now also part of the Disney stable). It wasn’t until very recently however that I realized how much I could bless Disney for the thought that goes into these movies for little people. I’ve long seen either a Disney story of a historical/mythical theme unfold on the screen. I’ve also – in … Continue reading

Lighten Up, Mom!

Okay, moms, things may be getting a little strenuous as we inch ever closer to the first major holiday of the season. If you could use a break from your “to do” list, take a few minutes off and enjoy a little levity. Things You’ll Never Hear a Mom Say 1. We don’t have any more napkins; you’ll have to use your sleeve. 2. Don’t worry about the hamper; just throw it on the floor. 3. Chocolate cake is fine for breakfast. It has eggs and milk in it. 4. Daddy is always right. 5. Don’t put on a sweater … Continue reading
