Lip, Lip Hooray

It’s amazing what you see in elementary schools these days. For instance, the other day my second grader and I watched in stunned silence as a mom slathered Desitin all over her kindergartener’s face and lips before heading out to the parking lot on an exceptionally cold day. Desitin, as in the stuff you put on your baby’s butt to soothe and relieve diaper rash. The boy wriggled, squirmed and moaned, but the mom was not deterred. She continued to apply the white cream on his upper lip, cheeks and chin like a seasoned cosmetologist. Apparently, I wasn’t the only … Continue reading

Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

When the Kids Realize It’s Important

My son turned ten yesterday. I asked him, “How do you like being ten?” He thought for a minute. “It’s pretty much the same as being nine. Except now I’m paying more attention to my capitalization.” Just then, his father called him to come do his chores, and he sighed. “Yep, it’s just like an ordinary day.” As he walked off to do his work, I laughed. What was it about being ten that made capitalization so much more important? Since that little conversation, he’s made several other comments. “I’m trying to pay more attention to things,” he told me … Continue reading

What About the Princes, Pt. 1

A long while back I wrote about the negative effect the Disney princess culture might have on girls, and about how it’s an infuriating fad. Then I started wondering about the Disney princes, and whether something similar might go on there with boys. Even if almost all Disney heroines are or become princesses, or are incorrectly marketed as such for the sake of the brand, at least most of them are actualized, well-developed characters. The majority of them are empowered women who think on their own and go after what they want. Disney’s leading men, however, mostly seem to adhere … Continue reading

Knitting With Your Preschooler

For more than a month now, I’ve been going to a knitting group on Wednesday afternoons. Our group just finished this week, and I suspect I’m going to go through withdrawal. I’ve scheduled a few knitting sessions with a friend and her daughter so that I can bridge the gap. It might be tough, but we can do it. In case you think that I’m a knitting expert, I am pleased to say that in the past few weeks I have finally mastered the art of purling. Hooray for me! My daughter has been knitting too, kind of. We were … Continue reading

Health Benefits of Coconut

I am allergic to coconut (and pineapple and shrimp), which really is not that unusual, unless you were born and raised in Hawaii. Yes, the jokes start to fly once I tell people about my food allergies. All kidding aside, when I informed my daughter’s pediatrician about my many food allergies shortly after she was born he recommended that we not introduce shellfish or other tropical fruits into her diet until she was at least 3-years-old. My daughter turned 3 a few weeks ago. Two days ago we attended a party that featured a gigantic white coconut cake. I’m not … Continue reading

A Car (Trip) To Remember

When we travel to Hawaii we typically don’t rent a car (mainly because we are visiting family and they allow us to use their vehicles). But, during our last trip I ended up renting a car for a few days so I could take my daughter on a few overnight trips to the other side of the island. I reserved an “economy” car and received a 2007 Dodge Caliber. Let me begin by saying that I am not in the market for a new car (not to say that I couldn’t use one, it’s just that it is not currently … Continue reading
