Staying Present, Staying Calm

When you are the parent of a toddler, your mind might spend much of its time engaged in gymnastics. It leaps forwards, backwards, then stops briefly to notice something that your child is doing right now only to dart off again in another direction as you think about things you want or need to do or ponder things that you have already done. With all of those mental gymnastics going on, it’s no wonder that you are exhausted by the end of the day. Sometimes, I find myself so mentally exhausted by the time the boys go to bed that … Continue reading

Living on Less

Lately I have had money on the brain…mostly the lack there of. If you are a single parent, you know what I’m talking about. It seems like there is never enough money to go around and just when you start feeling like you might actually make it this month, mother nature throws in some kind of catastrophe to keep you in check. This month naturally was a tight one for me. Logan’s birthday is coming up on Saturday. I usually start getting presents fairly early so that I’m only spending a little at a time, but even then it starts … Continue reading

Family Relationships Are The Present Expression Of Family History

While family trees and genealogy research are important tools for learning about one’s family history, relationships with those family members that are still living are the means by which we develop our own understanding of what the word “family” means. Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, grandparents, and others whom we refer to as “family” make up a group of people that we are taught from birth are special to us. As we grow and develop relationships with these people, we learn more about them and they do in fact become special to us. I have always enjoyed the relationships … Continue reading

Etiquette Basics for Home Party Sales Representatives

Home party sales are a popular home-based business opportunity. It seems as though a month does not go by where I do not receive an invitation to one of them, I do not know all that many people and I live in a fairly rural area. I can only imagine how many parties are going on in more heavily populated areas and how many invitations other, more well connected individuals receive. If you are planning to pursue a direct sales opportunity where you will be selling products at home parties, you will certainly be eager to get out there and … Continue reading

Time to Stop Living in Fear

After my divorce I swore off men. I was never going to get married again. In my mind they were all the same. My ex husband wasn’t the first run in with trouble. There have been very few good men in my life and a handful of pretty nasty ones. After a while I just started to expect it. In my mind men were emotionless. They were insensitive. They were manipulative. They were selfish. They were heartless. Not just some of them…all of them. Any time a good guy would walk into my life I’d start to prepare myself for … Continue reading

Witch Hunts Past and Present

Inspired by learning more about the Salem Witch Trials, I decided to take a look at other locations and times in history where witch hunts took place. There were very early witch hunts in ancient times, but I do not know of anyone who has been able to trace his or her ancestry back to, say, Rome in 170 B.C.. In the Late Middle Ages, the Roman Catholic Inquisition sponsored a few witch hunts, but things really began to heat up around 1484, when two Inquisitors published Malleus Maleficarum, an infamous treatise on witches. The publication of Malleus Maleficarum kicked … Continue reading

Working At Home – Past, Present, and Future

Did you know that working from home used to be the way that most people made a living? Prior to the industrial revolution, people were producing all kinds of goods and services at home and selling them to their neighbors, friends, and people in their local communities. If you had a farm, which had cows but no chickens, you did not have to go without eggs. Your neighbor probably had chickens and was probably more than happy to trade you some of his eggs for some of the milk from your cows. You did not even have to have a … Continue reading

Living with In-Laws?

Living with in-laws is a situation some married couples face. Sometimes it is early in the marriage until a couple gets on their feet financially. Other times it occurs when parents get older and need care. It is something a married couple needs to think seriously about before embarking on it. Mick and I have been in this position three times in our married life, and we have seen several others examples within family and close friends, so we know some of the positives and some of the pitfalls. Some things to consider if you are contemplating this decision: Do … Continue reading

Single Parenting: Living Apart

It is a well-known fact that more mothers than fathers have their children living with them. The fortunate dads that are awarded to do so are few and far between. Depending on how the court sees fit, most children will be living apart from their fathers, but will have visitation as the parents come together and schedule. Hopefully, this is something that the parents of the children can agree upon and take into consideration the best interest of their children. For the father or sometimes mother that must live apart from their children it is still very important to remain … Continue reading
