Let’s Play! How to Bond with Your New Stepfamily

Not being much of a bowler myself, I was a little surprised when my then-boyfriend suggested that he take my daughter out for a few frames one Saturday afternoon. It was one of the first weekends I had invited him to visit when my daughter wasn’t with her Dad. (After many years of single parenthood, I continued to be very wary of involving her in my romantic liaisons when I wasn’t yet sure where they were headed). This weekend had been discussed between us at length; our relationship had become serious, and we were starting to talk about a future … Continue reading

Make Fitness a Family Affair

When I was growing up you did not hear too much about enjoying fitness with your children. I do not remember many parent/child classes. We just woke up on a lazy summer day wondering how we would spend it. The parents and kids basically did their own things. We did enjoy family times, such as going to the park and going out to the movies, but not too much regarding fitness specifically. Years passed and fitness became more popular. Classes started springing up all over the place. Now, there is a class for just about everything, even the hula-hoop! Taking … Continue reading

Creating an Affordable Fitness Plan

Many people think that fitness plans must feature frequent trips to the gym or a major investment in expensive exercise equipment in order for them to be successful. The truth is you can get all the benefits of calorie-burning exercises without stepping foot into a fancy fitness center. The key is to be creative when designing an exercise plan. Here are some ways you can shed pounds without going broke: Make a commitment to losing weight and stick with it—-no matter how tired you might be. Self-perseverance is priceless and doesn’t cost a penny. Ditch your vehicle and walk, cycle, … Continue reading

Don’t Let the Cold Weather Derail Your Fitness Routine

We are in the middle of a major winter storm. When all is said in done we will be buried under 10-12 inches of snow. That’s on top of the 7 inches we were socked with last week. Then, there’s the bitterly cold tempeatures (we didn’t get above 20 degrees last week) and the dangerously frigid wind chills. It’s a wonder how gyms in Wisconsin sustain themselves during the winter months. I could easily ditch my exercise routine and chock it up to Old Man Winter, but I have that darn marathon I committed to running, so I don’t have … Continue reading

Make Weight Loss a Family Affair

I once had a friend who very religiously followed weight watchers. She did great and lost nearly 100 pounds. She made herself and her family a separate meal every night so that (in her words) ‘they wouldn’t be subjected to her diet stuff‘. Eventually, life crept up on her and she gained all the weight back. The reality was that because her kids could eat junk and get away with it she had it on hand. Then when she was hungry, and stressed or in a hurry, guess what she grabbed? I am certainly not suggesting that you push “weight … Continue reading

Children’s Fitness: New Global Health Threat in the Form of Video Games?

I’ve talked about World of Warcraft here before and I’ve addressed problems from concerned parents about the amount of time their kids spend playing video games versus how much time they spend on physical activities. Today, I want to take this discussion a bit further and I have my own personal reasons for maintaining my level of concern and this concern is something that I am working on here in my own family. My seven-year-old nephew loves to play this game and plays it at his father’s house a great deal. We can limit his game time when he is … Continue reading

Personal Fitness Challenge – How Does Your Family Measure Up?

When I was at my daughter’s gymnastics class this morning, I started talking to one of the other parents. Our daughters attend the same kindergarten class together and we were doing what moms do – swapping stories about our children. We were talking about the fact that we encouraged our kids to participate in dance classes, gymnastics and more, not to make them into professional athletes but instead to promote an active lifestyle and the enjoyment of it. That got me to thinking. Fitness is Really a Family Affair In an effort to promote fitness for yourself, consider the example … Continue reading

School’s Ending

I am a nervous wreck. School ends in a few days. What am I supposed to do with Jessie all day? Jessie’s been in school since January. She goes every day for about three hours. It’s not an ideal school situation, but it’s the one that we have. I would love for her to be in a program that is all day a few days a week, but she’s in speech therapy at the local public school. We wanted Jessie to attend a nearby Montessori school. We paid the registration fee and had the tuition together to prepay for a … Continue reading

Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse

I need free and low cost activities to do with the children this summer. School’s almost out and we’re going to need to do something. As much as I love to sit around the house, watch TV, and work on my computer, the toddler will go stir crazy. Daddy works from home and he needs some quiet to be able to do his job. Having the toddler in school has really gone a long way toward some quiet time in the house. We just got a family membership to the YMCA. That’s taking the place of Gymboree Play and Music … Continue reading

Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa

Before we begin, let me start off by saying that I am not affiliated with Pritikin nor is this a review nor was I compensated for writing this post. This information was relayed to me and I thought it may be of interest to some readers. I have never been to the Pritikin longevity center nor have I followed the Pritikin diet. Given this information I looked into it with an open mind and thought it sounded like a wonderful place to go on vacation. If only, this were a review where I could tell you of the wonderful time … Continue reading
