Making Your Home into a Healthy Zone, II

We all want our families and our homes to be healthy. Here are a few more tried and true ways to make your house into a healthier home:

Dispose of Germs

Using disposable products, such as paper towels and napkins, helps you throw away more germs instead of keeping them around. Many people use paper towels in the kitchen, but few use them in the bathroom, even though the bathroom contains many germs that can be a threat to health.

If you do use cloth dishcloths, kitchen towels, and hand towels, be sure to replace them with clean ones often. They should be replaced at least once each day and more often if they are used frequently. Paper towels and treated cleaning wipes are much better than sponges. Even if wipes don't always live up to their claims, they help avoid germs by going being disposed of after use, instead of collecting germs and spreading them around with continued use.

Disinfect

It is important to disinfect regularly, but it is even more important when someone in your home is sick. Use a proven disinfectant spray, or use bleach on surfaces that won't be harmed by it. There are many areas that we tend not to think of when it comes to disinfecting. The toilet handle, sink and tub faucets, doorknobs, telephone receivers, the remote control, light switches, are all items that family members touch regularly and can be culprits in spreading germs and illness.

Dust and Allergens

Every house gets dusty and collects allergens. Change or clean furnace and air conditioner filters regularly. Try spray allergen reducers such as Febreze. Dust with a dust trapping cloth or duster that doesn't just spread dust around and vacuum regularly. Consider an air purification system if you or your family members are especially sensitive.
