Diary of a Work-at-Home Mom, Part 3

In my work-at-home mom world, each day’s work holds something slightly different. That’s just the work end of things. There is also plenty of variety as far as the other things that I do during the day in my roles as “mom”, wife, and “domestic goddess wannabe”. This is, for the most part, a good thing and I certainly never get bored. It also means that I go through quite a few transitions each day. On any given day, I could be writing a blog post or two (or maybe even three) during Dylan’s nap and then writing more blog … Continue reading

Having Fun in the Airport

It’s not everyday that you see the words “fun” and “airport” in the same sentence, let alone as the title of an article. But, alas, 2009 is bringing with it some unique pairings. I should know. I just spent three unplanned hours in one of the world’s busiest airports and I am not the least bit bitter about it. Okay, maybe that’s not 100 percent true, but I consider my family very lucky as our plane did manage to depart on the same day we were ticketed, which is more than I can say for thousands of others whose flights … Continue reading

Can Parents Ever Compete With a Teen’s Friends?

Recently, there was an article in our local newspaper that shared “surprise” information. According to the article, teens actually like hanging out with their families and value their relationships with their parents. When I brought this article up at the dinner table with my own teens, they scoffed and remarked: “Where do they get this stuff?” Regardless of whether my teens would admit to liking me in a blind study or not, in reality, most parents of teens are in direct competition with the peer group. Sure, I’ve got money and I know how to cook and do laundry, but … Continue reading

How Many People Actually Live Here?

I have one of those homes. One of those dwellings where on any given day at any given hour, you will find a different collection of inhabitants within our four walls. The only mainstays and constants are the two cats and the Beta fish named Taylor (who continues to live and thrive despite having been told he would only live 2 years). As much as the control freak in me tries to get and keep a handle on the full-size bodies coming and going over my threshold, some days I just don’t have any idea how many people will be … Continue reading

“Mom, I’m Bored! Wanna Do Something?”

I am the last stop—the final person on the list of possibilities that my teens come to when they are looking to alleviate boredom. There have been windows of time when I wasn’t even on the list—I fell completely off. But, now, I have returned to the bottom of the list of possible human interactions, but I know if someone asks me to watch television, go for ice cream, or whatever, that they have exhausted all of their other social opportunities… Let’s get one thing straight, however, I EXPECT to be at the bottom of the list. As a matter … Continue reading
