Mom-lit

You've probably heard of "chick-lit" but have you heard of "mom-lit"? This rising new genre of books casts a mom as the central character but the moms aren't your typical June Cleaver kind of moms. The storylines delve into issues that many moms face but we don't really like to talk about such as feeling ambivalent toward our kids or feeling angry, mad and frustrated in our role as mom.

Why would a mom want to read mom-lit? In doing so, many women identify with the main character or at least certain aspects of what she's going through. This allows moms to realize that feelings they are experiencing are not theirs alone. Although works of fiction many writers use their own experiences in the characters they create. Women who read these books can identify with the struggles of being a mom, wife, etc. in the pages of books created specifically with her in mind. Some of the books have dark humor yet they express the reality of what many women experience as they navigate the twists and turns of being a mom. There are also humorous mom-lit books, which look at the lighter side of being a mother. But again, many of the incidents in the books have moms worldwide shaking their heads in agreement. Been there done that!

So if you're looking for a good read, why not consider mom-lit and see what the fuss is about. After you have put the kids to bed, curl up with a good mom-lit book. To get you started, here's a list of some popular mom-lit books on the market (can dad-lit be too far behind?).
