Money-Saving Mom Moves

School starts here in just a few weeks. Never mind that Target and Wal-Mart erected their school supply displays on the day after Fourth of July. “Mommy, is summer over?” my 7-year-old asked as we strolled by the cases of new pencils, pens and binders on JULY 5th. For weeks, I’ve resisted going near those aisles. I’m dreading having to dig deep to purchase all new supplies, plus uniforms, shoes, and the 17,000 other accessories that students need to tackle a new academic year. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to snap out of my denial phase pretty soon. Sure, my … Continue reading

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

One of my favorite books to share with my children is Simms Taback’s Joseph Had a Little Overcoat. The tale tells of Joseph who had, what else, but a favorite little overcoat. Eventually it gets “old and worn.” Instead of throwing it away, he makes it into a jacket. Once that also gets “old and worn,” the jacket becomes a scarf, and so on. Joseph continues to transform his garments as needed until he is down to just a button. Unfortunately, the button gets lost, but despite this development, Joseph still manages to make something out of it. The book … Continue reading

Let There Be Light

I can see it, smell it, and almost touch it. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel. And by tunnel I mean my daughter’s school year. In two weeks I will enjoy a treasured reprieve from the worst mom job ever—packing school lunches. I abhor the near daily ritual, which hurts my brain, as much as it does my wallet. I’ve endured this penitent practice for nearly three years and I still haven’t figured out what I can pack that my now 8-year-old won’t toss into the school’s 80-gallon garbage barrel. Aside from the torment of devising a … Continue reading

School Shopping On a Budget

It’s back to school time for most of us. I remember how worried I was that first year I was divorced. Where was the money going to come from for school clothes? There seemed to be so many expenses. I was fortunate that first summer, my niece and nephew were old enough to stay home alone and Hailey stayed with them so I didn’t have to pay for daycare, when school started it was a different story. There were so many things to worry about, Hailey was going to be a latch key kid for the first time, she would … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Royal Viewing and Happy Hybrids

I admit I was a die-hard Princess Diana fan. My mom woke me up at 2 a.m. Hawaii time to watch her fairy tale wedding to Prince Charles. I used my allowance to buy special editions of PEOPLE magazine whenever she was on the cover and I went gaga when her boys were born. So when it was announced that a dozens of Diana’s gowns were going to be displayed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa in Florida, for a split second I considered making the trip (then reality hit and I remembered that I can barely … Continue reading

iTunes: Over 3 Billion Served

Do you remember years ago when it was fun to watch the McDonald’s sign change to show how many burgers were sold. Somewhere along the line, they just couldn’t keep up any longer, and those signs changed to the line “billions and billions served. It is a very different world now, and success is measured in music downloads rather than patties with special sauce. Yesterday, Apple announced that more than three billion songs have been purchased and downloaded from the Apple iTunes store. “We’d like to thank all of our customers who have contributed to this incredible milestone,” said Eddy … Continue reading

Safari Makes Its Move

Safari is well-known in computing circles as the “world’s fastest browser.” Now, it seems, it may become a threat to Microsoft now that it is available to Windows PC users. Up until now, Safari was only able to be used on Apple machines running Mac operating systems. But yesterday, at the WWDC event, Steve jobs announced that will soon change. Jobs unveiled a new version of safari that is compatible with windows, a move that shocked many. So why would Jobs and Apple make this move with Safari? It isn’t all that surprising when you think about it. Software can … Continue reading
