Number of Parents Increasing, But Not Marriages

With all the hoopla surrounding the NCAA basketball tournament, Bruce Willis’ new marriage, and Lance Armstrong’s broken collarbone, you may have missed this bit of breaking news today: A record number of babies were born in the United States in 2007… and nearly half were welcomed by unmarried parents. Sarcasm aside (regarding the first part of the last sentence), this fact is legitimate. According to a new federal study, more babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any other year in the nation’s history – and a wedding ring made little difference in the matter. The new … Continue reading

Fears, Myths, and Realities About Being and “Older” Mom

While I write often here in the Parents Blog about life with three teenagers as a single parent, I do not really write about my plans to continue parenting and add to my family through adoption. As I sit on a “waiting list,” waiting for a referral, I do some volunteer work with some local special needs adoption organizations and prepare myself for becoming a single mom all over again. I have a few very supportive friends (whom I cling to) and plenty of people who wonder why on earth I would want to continue parenting now that I’m nearly … Continue reading

56-Year-Old Australian Gives Birth; Fertility Clinic Under Investigation

Another older mom has given birth and caused a bit of controversy. The 56-year-old Australian, who conceived with the aid of IVF, is believed to be the oldest mother in Australia. The woman has three children aged mid-teens to mid-30s. Her husband is reported to be in his mid-30s also. What was strange about this report is that the family was forced to move from their home to another suburb because of “negativity towards her pregnancy.” I am hoping that this negativity didn’t go beyond verbal taunts. I would hate to think that there exist people who are so narrow-minded … Continue reading

World’s Oldest Mom Gives Birth To Twins

A new world record has been set. A 67-year-old woman has just given birth to twins, making her the world’s oldest mother. The mother, whose name has not been released at the time of this writing, gave birth in Barcelona, Spain, after undergoing in vitro fertilization in the U.S. The previous record holder was a 66-year-old Romanian who gave birth in 2005. The mother and babies were reported to be doing fine, although the babies were in an incubator. Once this news hits the mainstream media, I’m sure there will be lots of talk about the mother being too old. … Continue reading

More Unwed Older Women Having Babies

Fewer teens are having babies. Instead the majority of unmarried women having babies are women over 35. In fact, the number of unmarried older women having babies has reached a record high, according to a report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The increase was seen across all racial groups, with nearly 4 in 10 babies last year being born to unmarried older moms. One reason for the increase is the growing number of women who delay marriage and family for their career. When they hear the familiar tick-tick-ticking of their biological clock, some women want to … Continue reading
