Moms: Of Gifting to Ourselves

Did you get exactly what you wanted for Mother’s Day? I didn’t get what I asked for; instead, I got something even better. My fellow blogger, Stephanie, got what she wanted, a coffee machine, but it didn’t come from any of her children, or even her spouse. Rather, the self assured mother of three took the initiative to purchase the appliance, and gifted it to herself. Some may consider Stephanie’s move audacious, while others may consider it empowering. Personally, I classify it as self preservation. A requirement for many mothers out there. If you aren’t going to look out for … Continue reading

Murphy, Kitty, and Tabby’s Dilemma: What to Get Wayne for Father’s Day?

Three times a year Murph, Kitty, and I struggle with what to get Wayne for (a) his birthday, (b) Christmas, and (c) Father’s Day. This year Tabby will get initiated into the chaos, starting with Father’s Day. She’ll find Wayne’s not an easy person to give gifts to. He’s pretty modest and doesn’t like being made a fuss over. Nor does he like receiving lavish gifts. He’d rather see us saving our pennies instead of wasting them on him. Except, he does an awful lot for us, not to mention puts up with an awful lot from us. We have … Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day

Is it really Sunday? I’m exhausted today. I’ve got a ton of work to do and all these end of the year functions going on with our daughter. (Excuse me, I have to giggle over the thought of saying I have ‘functions’ to attend, but I do). Today is Mother’s Day and it’s a day that we honor the mothers in our lives. I like this day, of course, I’m a mom now and even though I’ve been a mom for years and I still have a hard time remembering that today is Mother’s Day. First Thing This Morning I … Continue reading

Are Parents Important Life Lessons Sinking In?

How can you tell if the lessons you have been trying to teach your children are sinking in? One way is to watch the things your kids say or do. If you kids insist that you attend school events or you receive compliments about your teen’s behavior, you’re probably doing something right. David Breachoft, a professor of psychology and family studies at Concordia College, asked his students to come up with a list of important lessons for life that they learned from their mothers. Here’s a sampling of what his students had to say: You can do anything you set … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Fitness: Consider Making Mom Your Workout Partner

I know, it may sound crazy and a few years ago, I wouldn’t have been espousing this particular suggestion. For years, my mother and I were not particularly close. My grandmother had been a fundamentally strong influence in my life and in many ways, she was every bit as much a mother to me. But over the last few years since my grandmother passed away, my mother and I have grown closer. I think my daughter’s existence has contributed to this stronger relationship. Mom as a Workout Partner Anyway, as I was saying before I took off on my verbal … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Romance

You may not think Mother’s Day is a day for romance, but I actually think it’s a fantastic opportunity for Dad’s everywhere to appreciate their wives. Celebrating our mothers or being celebrated for our motherhood is wonderful, but being remembered as wives and women is a lot sexier. Mothers are Women Every mother is a woman. She was once a little girl, she became a teenager a young woman and she even became a blushing bride. When she became a mother and a wife, she never stopped being a woman. It may surprise some men to hear this, but even … Continue reading

Mother’s Day: Gifts for Health and Well-being

Still looking for Mother’s Day gifts for that special mom in your life? Why not give the gift of health? I have noticed, as we get closer to Mother’s Day, many advertisements for health-related gifts for moms. For instance, as I was walking this morning there was an ad enticing listeners to give their mom (or special mom in their life) a gift membership to a health club. I’ve heard or seen ads for mammograms, exercise classes, spa treatments and health screenings. I think these types of gifts are great ideas. They are thoughtful and send the message that we … Continue reading
