How Would He Have Voted During the Suffrage Movement?

The weekend before last Wayne and I headed to our local polling place to capitalize on the early voting system the city’s got set up. It’s nice. We enjoyed short lines, which spared us from the muss and fuss that’s sure to plague the polls next Tuesday. I got to thinking how remarkable that was. Not so much about the convenience of early voting (which is pretty nice), but about voting period. It’s hard for me to fathom that it hasn’t even been 100 years that women have had the right to vote. Grandma Wasn’t a Suffragette Whenever I think … Continue reading

The Older Couple at Church

When my mom was living with us, Wayne and I made it a point to take her to church on Sundays. She was Catholic, we’re not, but the Sunday after she died, we made a point of going to her church anyway. It was part of our own private memorial to her. We arrived a little early and took a seat in one of the back pews where we’d sit with my mom. I immediately started looking for them –the older couple Wayne had spotted the first Sunday we’d gone with my mom. “Aren’t they cute?” he’d leaned over and … Continue reading

Who Would Your Dog Vote For?

An Australian shepherd mix was registered to vote in Washington State for more than a year in protest of a voting law change. Owner Jane Balogh registered Duncan M. McDonald in April 2006 — in order to meet identification requirements, she put her phone bill in the dog’s name. That was apparently enough for election officials, who sent the dog his first ballot in November 2006. Balogh returned the ballot unmarked — she wrote VOID on it and stamped a paw print on the signature line. Someone called her house after that and she confessed to registering her dog to … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Gisele’s Bold Move and Jerry’s New Record

GISELE’S BOLD MOVE The jokes keep flying at the expense of NFL super star Tom Brady… The beefy quarterback for the New England Patriots has been making headlines for two straight weeks—-ever since his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan gave birth to a baby boy who shares his DNA, but not his last name. Now word comes that while Brady may not be physically present in his new son’s life at least he sent a present to him… as did the football star’s current flame Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen (whom Brady hooked up with shortly after he dumped Moynahan). In a move … Continue reading

Old Enough to Vote!

My eldest daughter and I were chatting the other night about the current political climate and she casually reminded me that she will be old enough to vote in the next, upcoming presidential election. How on earth did THAT happen?! How odd to think of my baby sitting down to read the voter’s pamphlet and being able to cast her own votes based on her own choices, information, and misinformation… I take voting pretty seriously and I don’t think I’ve missed an election–local or otherwise–since I first started my own voting career at the age of 18. I still remember … Continue reading

Baby Blogger Update

Good afternoon, I wanted to be the first to give you a heads up that my tenure as a full time baby blogger is coming to an end. I’ll be working in a supportive capacity over the month of February and retiring from baby by the first of March. I have been writing for the Baby blog since January of last year, mostly as a guest blogger; but I took over as a full time Baby Blogger last summer. My Tenure I’ve enjoyed my tenure here and I’ve loved exploring the world of the newborn, the infant and the toddler … Continue reading

Common Law Marriages – Hold Onto Your Hats

Hold onto your hats folks, when this news bit came down the pipeline to my desk. In Colorado, the Court of Appeals ruled that a 15 year-old girl is old enough to be the common-law wife of a man more than twice her age. While I was a pretty mature 15 year-old, I am having a little trouble with this idea. The law is supposed to protect kids and teenagers – especially from impulsive rash decisions like announcing marriage to someone old enough to be her father. Now, legal experts are speculating that this ruling is opening the door to … Continue reading

The Bedroom TV

My father just offered to purchase a television for my daughter’s bedroom. I’m still waiting for John Quiñones to pop out of my hall closet because there’s no way my dad’s proposition can be legit. He’s testing me right? Like Quiñones does to all those unsuspecting individuals on “What Would You Do?” A new flat screen TV for my 8-year-old’s bedroom… riiiiight. From a guy who refused to allow me to touch our family’s TV, which didn’t move from its spot in the living room.  The same dad who mandated that an egg timer be set each time me and … Continue reading

Benefits Cut for Disney World Premium Annual Passes

The lobby of the Grand Floridian, one of Disney World’s most exclusive hotels Walt Disney World continues to aggravate its most loyal fans, as it announced in December that discounts for premium annual pass members will be cut.  The Orlando Sentinel has all the details. Since 2010 Disney World’s been pulling back a lot on the discounts it offers various pass holders.  This time, the target is premium annual passes, which already cost around $750 (Florida residents get a discount at around $600).  Now the shopping discounts premium annual pass holders receive have been cut in half. Let’s take a … Continue reading

How Accurate is ‘Lincoln?’ Part 2

I went to see Lincoln this weekend and it was a great film. But, how well did it really portray history? Be forewarned – this blog contains some movie spoilers! The film was about Lincoln trying to get the 13th Amendment passed in order to abolished slavery. As for the tension in the country as Lincoln was trying to get the amendment passed – that was accurate. I just didn’t realize all the political tension. Some in Congress still wanted the Emancipation Proclamation recalled and even those for the 13th Amendment didn’t seem ready to hear the specific words “equality … Continue reading
