Becoming the Mom You Never Thought You’d Be

Attention Girl Scout cookie lovers: FYI–The Girl Scouts have issued a statement saying that their cookies are not affected by the current peanut butter warning. I just got the “breaking news” from my Girl Scout mommy pal Brenda. Here’s the irony: Unlike in years past when we would be reporting this type of news at the local TV station we worked at together, we now get it from our kids. Or at least she does. Yes, my once ultra-career oriented pal is now a stay-at-home mom to a Girl Scout Brownie. What’s more, she’s driving the minivan she swore she … Continue reading

Father Furious After 9-Year-Old Daughter is Accused of Selling “Drugs” at School

When you hear the word “drugs” what substances come to mind? Most people would answer: marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy, PCP, or perhaps even alcohol. In other words the ring is supposed to help kids say, “I don’t,” before they say “I do.” The rings are part of an Evangelical Christian movement to encourage teens to make a “pledge of chastity.” According to my research, a father, who was outraged to discover that his … Continue reading

Parents Confused After Daughter Gets Booted from the Girl Scouts

Image that you’re Magi Klages’ parents. Your beautiful 8-year-old autistic daughter was part of a Brownie troop that got too big, so she was moved to a smaller group for children with special needs. All seems to be going well, until one day Magi throws a fit during a matt-weaving project. You are there to witness the entire event and don’t consider Magi’s behavior abnormal for an autistic child thrust into a new situation. But four days later you get a call saying that Magi is no longer welcome in the new troop. What do you do? If you are … Continue reading
