Pre-Tween Crushes

I used to think my dream guy was an amalgamation of Michael J. Fox, Jason Bateman and JFK Jr., but now I think he is more a mixture of Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel and Dean Cain… though I could be wrong. Still, a crush is a crush, and the feelings I had for Jason Bateman when I was in junior high school are as real as the ones swooning Justin Bieber fans have today. Yes, I kissed a life-size cut-out of “The Hogan Family” star and drooled over magazine photos of the former president’s hunk of a son; however, I … Continue reading

Mommy Crushes

Grown women go gaga over 16-year-old pop star Justin Bieber… there’s just something inherently wrong with that scenario. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Did you see the episode of “Saturday Night Live” where Tina Fey played a high school teacher smitten with a student played by Bieber? “I don’t know whether I want to marry him or put him in a stroller and push him around the mall,’’ Fey’s character ponders in a dreamy baby girl voice-over. So much for motherhood being connected with adulthood… and completely disconnected to youth culture. These days moms are getting … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Void

While some kids are nursing sore stomachs from gorging on all of the Valentine’s Day treats they scored yesterday, others are nursing broken hearts from being overlooked by their peers. Then, there are the kids who live in a Valentine’s Day-free world. They are the lucky ones. The tykes, who won’t have to spend countless hours in therapy, because they weren’t gifted with a homemade card and heart-shaped Sweet Tarts. You can find those kids across the pond in the United Kingdom. According to reports, administrators at one British elementary school decided to ban Valentine’s Day cards and candy because … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Love: How Young is Too Young?

When my brother was in the sixth grade he socked away four months’ worth of allowance and added it to two months’ worth of salary he earned as a paperboy. Then, a week before Valentine’s Day, he and my mom went to a local jewelry store where my brother proceeded to fork over his life savings to purchase a gold chain with a matching jewel encrusted letter “M” charm, for a girl named Michelle. Michelle was to my brother what the little red-haired girl was to Charlie Brown. Out. Of. His. League. Sad story short, after purchasing the necklace, wrapping … Continue reading

The Not So Sweet Side of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day cards: curse or charming tradition? If you are the parent of an elementary school-age child, then you probably chose the former. I just oversaw the construction of 22 semi-homemade Valentine’s Day cards. My 6-year-old daughter painstakingly wrote out each and every one of her classmates’ names on the cards while I went through my entire stockpile of scotch tape trying to get a bag of heart-shaped Sweet Tarts and a Dum Dum to adhere to a strip of flimsy construction paper. Whether or not you find the time-honored Valentine’s Day tradition to be a tiresome chore or a … Continue reading

Keeping it Real on Valentine’s Day

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday. Does it get any more unromantic? Who goes through the trouble of tracking down a sitter for a Monday date night? Sure, Valentine’s Day is for lovers, but if you are a parent with young children, then you might find yourself sticking close to home on February 14th. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you have to throw romance out the window. There are ways you can keep the flames of passion burning on Love Day even with the kids around. Here’s how: Have a 10 o’clock tryst: Or 11 or midnight… … Continue reading

Kids’ Meals for Parents

I’ve been known to down a Happy Meal or two since becoming a mom. However, consuming leftover fries and soggy chicken nuggets with mini teeth marks dotting the surface, has more to do with not wanting to waste food and money than with a personal preference for fast food kids’ meals. Quite honestly, I despise kids’ meals. And I could care less about Twilight. Nice to finally get that off my chest. So how is it that I am able to confess my distaste for two seemingly unrelated pop culture phenomenons in a single blog? Five words: Burger King Eclipse … Continue reading

Silly Bandz for Parents

While I often drool over her fab wardrobe and to-die-for bank account, there is something I absolutely, positively don’t envy about mega-celeb parent Sarah Jessica Parker—-her obsession for Silly Bandz. Talk about a fashion faux pas. What’s a good-looking, highly successful, Hollywood heavyweight like SJP trying to prove by appearing in public wearing wacky neon-colored plastic bracelets that are a must-have for the 10 and under crowd? Apparently, the super celeb mom has a son who is part of the Silly Bandz cult, so now she too is covering her forearms with the cheap rubber band bracelets shaped like zoo … Continue reading

Is Justin Bieber a Girl?

Let me preface this blog by clearly stating that I have nothing against mega-gigantic, ultra, super crazy popular singing sensation Justin Bieber. In fact, up until a few months ago, I had absolutely no clue who he was. I was blissfully unaware of the 16-year-old’s power to turn not only his teen fans’, but also their mothers, into mush. As for “Bieber Fever,” I would have probably told you that you could contract it from unclean surfaces. Then, I saw a story on the local news about obsessed 30-plus-year-old women, who were flooding area radio stations with phone calls, in … Continue reading
