The Bedroom TV

My father just offered to purchase a television for my daughter’s bedroom. I’m still waiting for John Quiñones to pop out of my hall closet because there’s no way my dad’s proposition can be legit. He’s testing me right? Like Quiñones does to all those unsuspecting individuals on “What Would You Do?” A new flat screen TV for my 8-year-old’s bedroom… riiiiight. From a guy who refused to allow me to touch our family’s TV, which didn’t move from its spot in the living room.  The same dad who mandated that an egg timer be set each time me and … Continue reading

Can You Really Afford Cable?

Forget about alcohol, tobacco, Facebook or chocolate; cable TV is one of the most addicting entities around. Just ask the kids who spend hours upon hours watching it. Then, ask the parents who use it as a babysitter. These days it doesn’t take much to get moms and dads to admit that they’ve used cable to keep their kids occupied. Got an important phone call to make, turn on Nick Jr. Want to use the bathroom in peace, switch it to Cartoon Network. Desperate for a few minutes of uninterrupted me time, Disney Channel to the rescue. Cable is undoubtedly … Continue reading

Disney Considers Withdrawing from Hulu

A number of us here at families.com are big fans of ABC’s Disney-rific show “Once Upon A Time Some of us don’t have the time to watch the show when it airs, so we’re able to catch up with it online later. However, we might not have that option for much longer. One of the best ways to catch up with shows is through media website Hulu. Hulu streams dozens of shows from various channels: NBC, ABC, FOX, and many of their cable affiliates. In most cases shows are available the morning after they air (FOX makes free viewers wait … Continue reading

Do You Allow Your Kids to Watch TV News?

After reporting and anchoring local TV news for more than decade, I never considered tuning out the events of the day after giving birth. I’ve watched the evening news religiously since I was in high school and never dreamed there would come a day when I would be forced to wean myself from my 6 o’clock fix. However, that day has come. A few weeks ago, I was in the kitchen making dinner with the TV news on in the background when my 7-year-old came waltzing in. Typically, she’ll sit on a stool at the counter and try to snag … Continue reading

See What Licking a Shopping Cart at Target Will Get You?

If you are a mom and doubt whether what you do makes a difference in your family life, just decide to catch a cold or a stomach flu or something like that. You don’t have to go very far to get your choice of germs. Your local playground will do. Or, you can do as I did. Have your child lick the end of the cart at Target and then when she comes down with something, have her cough in your face several times just to make sure that the germs get a chance to take hold in your body. … Continue reading

Cutting Corners

I love watching room design shows on HGTV. They offer fabulous tips on how to get organized, though their budgets are typically bigger (much bigger) than what I can afford. I would love to go on a shopping trip to the Container Store ala Supermarket Sweep. I could fill my cart with specialty boxes and storage containers designed specifically for all of my scrapbook supplies, from albums to embellishments and everything in between. It’s nice to dream, but reality is a different story. As I look at my buttons, brads, eyelets and stamps sitting in old baby food jars, repurposed … Continue reading

A Tale of Two Mothers

I just watched part of Diane Sawyer’s TV interview with Jaycee Dugard. She’s the woman, who was kidnapped in 1991 when she was 11 years old, and held captive for 18 years by pyscho Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. Dugard spoke about being imprisoned in Garrido’s backyard where she was repeatedly raped as a child and later gave birth to two daughters (her first when she was just 14 years old) fathered by her sicko kidnapper. Dugard told Diane Sawyer: “I didn’t know I was in labor. I was still … locked [in] at the time. Just scared.” Still, … Continue reading

Could “Who Do You Think You Are?” Win an Emmy?

An Emmy is an award given by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to shows that have made outstanding achievements in television. Last year, the popular genealogy show “Who Do You Think You Are?” was nominated, but did not win. Could it win this time? The show “Who Do You Think You Are?” is a genealogy series that can be found on NBC. Each episode focuses on an individual celebrity and his or her family tree. Viewers can follow along as the celebrity visits locations around the world where one of their ancestor’s lived, worked, or had been at. … Continue reading

Do You Allow Your Kids to Watch the News?

The other day a friend of mine sarcastically suggested that certain cable news shows should come with a PG-13 rating. If you have tweens or teens, you probably don’t do a lot of news censoring. However, if your kids are 12 or younger, you might be hesitant to allow your son or daughter to flip on CNN, MSNBC or Fox News without your permission, or more importantly, your presence in the room. Despite, or perhaps, because I spent nearly 10 years as a local TV news anchor/reporter, I never allow my 6-year-old to watch the evening news by herself. What’s … Continue reading

Appreciate What You Have

Keeping up with the Joneses is something that contributes to a lot of people’s drowning in debt. Even though it is a violation of the Tenth Commandment, people still want the things that other people have. Appearances are everything. If someone else appears to have it all, others want it too. Unfortunately, we can only see what’s on the outside. We are not privy to what goes on in other people’s bedrooms or the state of the bills that arrive in other people’s mailboxes. I want success and wealth as much as the next person. Maybe not wealth so much … Continue reading
